(Catacombs in France were based off of the catacombs of Rome, and were built in the late 1700's to house the dead from the various cemeteries around Paris.) Paris était à court de place dans leurs cimetières pour tous les corps des défunts. (Paris was running out of room in their cemeteries for all of the deceased bodies.) La solution était de déplacer le métro mort, dans des carrières abandonnées une fois peuplées par des voleurs et des sans-abri. 3 Faits Intéressants… Il ya actuellement environ 6 millions de morts logé dans les catacombes. (There are currently approximately 6 million dead housed in the catacombs.) Tunnels étaient autrefois utilisés comme un repaire pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale pour les Français aux Allemands. (Tunnels were once used as a hideout during WWII for the French from the Germans) Les Allemands ont utilisé les tunnels des catacombes ainsi de fournir un bunker. (The Germans used tunnels of the Catacombs as well to provide as a bunker.) Il ya des entrées secrètes dans les catacombes. 4 Chronologie… 4 April 1777 : Louis XVI established the Quarries Inspectorate responsible for protecting Parisian quarries. The City of Paris Quarries Inspectorate is currently working on this project. 7 April 1786 : Blessing and consecration of the formerTombe- Issoire quarries, which became the ossuary known as the Catacombs. It took two years to transfer all the bones from the cimetière des Innocents graveyard, which was the largest in Paris. 1787-1814 : Transfer of bones from other Parisian parish graveyards to the Catacombs. 1810-1814 : Héncart de Thury, the Inspector of Quarries, carrier out work to make the site accessible to visitors. 1859 : The final transfer of bones takes place during the urban regeneration work carried out by Haussmann. 1983 : Management of the Catacombs is taken over from the Quarries Inspectorate by the City of Paris Cultural Affairs Division. 2002 : Catacombs officially become part of the Carnavalet - History of Paris Museum. 2008 : The Catacombs reopen after three months of work, notably in the Port-Mahon gallery, which has been closed since 1995.
