4 How about this interview? Hello, what’s your name? Hello. I’m John … John Smith. And how old are you, John? I was sixteen last November … November 9 th. And could you tell me what your hobbies are? … You do have some hobbies, don’t you? Yes I do. I have quite a few. I don’t get much time during the week because of homework! But if I have any free time, I watch TV … films, funnies, but not soaps. I hate soaps. What do you do at the weekend? I go fishing with my dad and uncle most Saturdays. We fish for carp in a pond near us. We belong to an angling club. Anything else? I always have my walkman with me when I fish! I love music.

5 Better, wasn’t it? Why? Because he said more? Because he didn’t use one-word answers. Because he volunteered information – rather than have it dragged out of him!

7 Hints: Always try to say more than ONE thing. Add adjectives, wherever possible. Add an opinion, where suitable. Add a time reference.

The number of bedrooms and the fact that there is a garden support the information that it is quite a large house. Yet more information about the house + an opinion. ‘Moderne’ is not a difficult word to remember, but can you say it in French? A fourth piece of information that impresses because of its use of depuis + present tense to say ‘We’ve been living here for 3 years’.

17 Another hint: No one is going to check up on what you say! So you don’t have to describe anything absolutely accurately! Of course, if you can, then that’s great. But it’s perfectly all right to have some prepared descriptions ‘up your sleeve’ ready to use if you get asked the right question.

18 What kind of questions can you expect to be asked? Describe your family! Your pets. What’s your house like? Describe your bedroom. What’s your favourite subject at school? Why? Where do you go on holiday? Where did you go last year? What are you hoping to do when you finish your exams?

19 À vous, maintenant! Never use one-word answers. Always either add a second idea or repeat the same structure with different information. Describe things by using adjectives. Give your opinion – both positive and negative! Offer information – don’t make the interviewer have to drag it out of you!
