4 Welcome to Lyon, France's second largest city! With 1.5 million inhabitants the city has everything you need. Lyon became famous for silk manufacturing in the 15 th & 16 th century. Today it is an educational center with a diversified economy. Lyon stands where two great rivers, the Rhône and the Saône, meet. One of the most beautiful districts in Lyon is 'Le Vieux Lyon' (built in the 16 th & 17 th centuries). This district occupies more than 24 hectares on the banks of the Saône River at the foot of the Fourvière Hill.
