14 LA DATE Talking about the date in French is a little bit tricky. There are two things to keep in mind: 1.the definite article must be used and (attn: American English speakers)definite article - Definite article = le / la / les / l’ 2.the number always precedes the month.number

15 LA DATE To ask What's the date? say Quelle est la date ?

16 LA DATE To ask about a specific date, say C’est quand, ton anniversaire? When is your birthday? Mon anniversaire est … My birthday is…

17 LA DATE Use the following construction to respond: C’est+ le + date + month + year

18 On the first day of the month, you have to use the ordinal number premier (first) or 1 er (1st) rather than the cardinal number.ordinal numbercardinal number It's April 1st - C'est le premier avril, C'est le 1 er avril. but It's July 4th - C'est le 4 juillet.

19 Of course, if we’re going to be talking about years, we’ll need to be able to say higher numbers!

20 NUMBERS UP TO 1000 Numbers 70-79 These continue on from soixante-neuf (69) to … 70 = soixante-dix, 71 = soixante et onze, 72 = soixante-douze, 73 = soixante-treize etc. Notice the et in 71 which mimics the behavior of 21, 31 etc.

21 NUMBERS UP TO 1000 Numbers 80-99 The French for eighty is quatre-vingts. Numbers 81-99 consist of quatre-vingt- (minus the -s) plus a number 1-19: 81 = quatre-vingt-un, 82 = quatre-vingt-deux, 90 = quatre-vingt-dix, 91 = quatre-vingt-onze etc. Notice that none of these numbers use the word “et.”

22 NUMBERS UP TO 1000 Hundreds The French for '(a) hundred' is cent. Multiples of a hundred go deux cents, trois cents, etc with an -s on cents. If the number is not an exact multiple of 100, then the number representing the last two digits follows cent, which loses its -s: 101 = cent un 201 = deux cent un 202 = deux cent deux Notice that in French there is no word for 'and' between the hundreds and the tens/units, unlike in English, and that "a hundred" is just cent, not un cent.

23 NUMBERS UP TO 1000 Thousands The French for '(a) thousand' is mille. This word never adds an -s, and there is never a word for 'and' between the thousands and the hundreds/tens/units. So… 1000 = mille 2000 = deux mille 2001 = deux mille un 3079 = trois mille soixante-dix-neuf.
