This document is divided in two sections. The first one presents expected reactions of children at the intuitive or preoperational stage who are confronted with specific problems. The second section explains how children can reach the concrete operational stage. Avertissements(1)

Do not start working with children before part II : Towards the concrete operational stage. Il would be better to read the entire document before using it, even partially, with a child. Avertissements (2)

Section 1: Reactions of the preoperational child. Première partie : Réactions de lenfant pré-opératoire.

Between ages 4 and 8, we can observe a giant leap in childrens cognitive development. They become concrete operational.

Before becoming concrete operational, the child will compare these two bottles using only one of their dimensions, usually their height. He will believe that the upright bottle contains more liquid than the one lying down.

To the question « Which row contains the most chips? » the preoperational child will usually answer by taking into account the length of the rows, forgetting the space between consecutive chips.

To check if this shape is a square, the child will first count horizontally as shown and then count vertically and conclude that the shape is a square. He starts counting vertically from the second row because he believes that the cell containing the number 4 belongs only to the top row.

The child is asked to complete the grid on the left by adding the missing figure to the middle cell. The two models on the right show possible solutions. The child will only take into account the vertical or the horizontal dimension and will reproduce one of the shapes next to it.

If the child must choose between two equivalent pieces of play dough, he will usually take the piece on the left, considering only the horizontal dimension of each shape.

In the game of Tic-Tac-Toe, the child does not see the diagonal line, which is a combination of the horizontal and vertical lines. In this case, if the child plays with the X, we only need to block the vertical line for him to think that the game is a draw.

This situation shows two cardboard squares of identical dimensions. When the child looks at the left figure, he thinks that the red square is bigger since it exceeds the other one. After turning the left figure around so as to get the right figure, the child changes his mind. The blue square is now bigger since its corners exceed the other square.

To the question: « Are there more lions or more animals? », the preoperational child answers that there are more lions (3) since there are only 2 animals. He cannot understand that lions are lions and animals at the same time.

When we ask the preoperational child « How many units are there in the number 25? », he will answer 5. He cannot yet see that the 2 represents 2 « groups of 10 » and also 20 units. Understanding this is much more difficult than succeeding in the lions problem. The preoperational child does not understand the concepts of grouping and of position value, but he can learn to give right answers. If this is the case, his evaluations will be misleading.

When the preoperational child groups elements in packs of ten, he does not use these groupings when asked to identify the total number of elements. He will obtain an answer by counting the elements one by one.

Part II Towards the concrete operational stage Deuxième partie : Vers lopératoire concret

Lets start by teaching a 4 year old child to play Tic-Tac-Toe. The learning of this game gives us the chance to observe the difficulty met by a preoperational child when combining two variables, in this case the vertical and horizontal lines, in order to see the diagonal line. Helping a child to reach the concrete operational stage.

This game is an excellent tool that can be used to bring the child to the concrete operational stage. To play, use a grid and chips, for example blue and red chips. Explain that the goal of the game is to line up 3 chips of the same color in the grid. Give examples by showing, with a ruler, some winning arrangements.

Winning arrangements: the ruler is shown in red.

Play your moves in the following order. You may have to play an equivalent variation and you may need more than one try to get it. In any case, the shown sequence is the most common. Let the child begin by placing an X. Tic-Tac-Toe (3) Jouez les coups dans lordre indiqué. Laissez lenfant commencer. Supposons quil a choisi les X. Le Tic-tac-toc (3)

You will probably need to comment your last move by explaining that you must defend yourself and that there are still ways to line up three Xs and win the game.

The child only sees Xs lined up in the vertical line, so block him.

The child will probably be mad at you! He will show you that he cant win since all vertical and horizontal lines are blocked. Tell him that he can still win. Let him look for a solution.

Let the child play his move and … realize that your way of playing should get better. Use the ruler to show that its possible to line up three Xs on a diagonal.

The preceding exercise will not automatically bring the child to think about and see the diagonal. You will notice that the child considers alternately the horizontal an vertical lines. He will move his finger one cell horizontally and then one cell vertically rather than move diagonally. This is a « staircase » movement.

The previous exercise will allow you to observe, in a surprising application, that the preoperational child cannot consider two variables simultaneously. The Tic-Tac-Toe game helps the child begin to understand the importance of coordinating both the vertical and horizontal lines, but this is far from obvious for him. Have him play this game regularly and you will observe a progression towards the concrete operational stage.

In order to bring the child to change his way of thinking, he must be faced with a cognitive conflict. Fundamentally, a cognitive conflict exists when someone realizes that he believes in two contradictory ideas. Helping a child to reach the concrete operational stage.

First, the child makes a statement that happens to be false. He will then be faced with a similar problem that will bring him to a different / opposite statement. Helping a child to reach the concrete operational stage.

The answers to the two problems will then be presented together so that the contradiction becomes obvious. Helping a child to reach the concrete operational stage, Les deux réponses aux deux problèmes sont alors évoquées parallèlement afin que la contradiction devienne évidente. Rendre lenfant opératoire

Two possible reactions: -The child sees the contradiction and tries to identify the mistake. -The child does not see the contradiction and we must present another problem so that he realizes it. Helping a child to reach the concrete operational stage.

When a person, child or adult, realizes that hes stuck in a cognitive conflict, its no use insisting. He knows that something isnt right and his brain will mobilize all available resources to solve this conflict. Helping a child to reach the concrete operational stage.

If he cant solve the conflict by himself, the child will at least realize that one of his answers is wrong. He will be ready to reconsider some of his prior knowledge.

Before working with preoperational children to help them reach the concrete operational stage, make sure that you read and respect the following users guide. Avertissements

You must work one on one with the child. You will not get good results if the work isnt done individually. Work on only one problem per period. A period should not exceed 10 minutes. You should count between 3 and 7 days between periods.

Present the problem as is. Question the child to understand what he thinks. Position yourself in front of him so that you can observe his eyes and hands. Do not tell him if the answers are right or wrong but act as though youre learning and trying to understand his explanations.

«DO NOT EXPLAIN WHAT HE SHOULD THINK OR HOW HE SHOULD SOLVE THE PROBLEM. Make sure that he understands the problem well and, if the answer is wrong, try to create the appropriate cognitive conflict. If the problem is not solved by the end of the period, let the child go with the doubt created by the cognitive conflict.

Between 3 and 7 days later, proceed with the next work session. Do not come back on the last sessions problem but go straight to the next one. All these problems have the same goal and it will only be reached when the child is confronted with new problems. If a child wants to talk about a prior problem, listen to him. If he succeeds, congratulate him. If he fails again, keep the questioning attitude you had before.

Do not surprise yourself if, from one period to the next, things seem to go better. This does not mean that the problems are easier but rather that the childs thinking is evolving. If things dont get better after 5 or 6 problems, stop everything for one month. The child is probably not ready yet to leave the preoperational stage.

You should know that around one of every 300 people will never get to the concrete operational stage. These people suffer from neurological problems that greatly affect their logic. People with Downs Syndrome are an example. In these cases, the person is not aware of the existing cognitive conflict and this will stop him from evolving to the next stage of thinking.

To check if this is a square, the child will first count the horizontal cells and then the vertical ones to conclude that its really a square. He will start counting vertically from the second cell since he considers that the corner belongs to the top row.

At this point, using the same grid, ask the child to count the number of cells in the left vertical row. Then ask him to count the number of cells in the bottom row. Heading to the concrete operational stage - The square (2) Il faut demander à lenfant de dénombrer les cases du côté gauche.

This is the result the child should get and which will create the cognitive conflict. Heading to the concrete operational stage - The square (3) Voici ce que lélève obtiendra et qui créera le conflit. Vers lopératoire Le carré (3)

By showing the two results and reminding the child that the original shape has not been modified, the conflict becomes obvious. « Is it or is it not a square? » Heading to the concrete operational stage - The square (4) En rappelant les deux réponses obtenues et en rappelant que personne na modifié la figure originale, le conflit devient évident : «Est-ce un carré ou non ?». Vers lopératoire Le carré (4)

Place the above shapes in front of the child. Extend your hands and ask him to place the triangles in your right hand and the blue shapes in your left hand. Two types of shapes must be checked: those that are neither triangles nor blue and those that are both triangles and blue. The first group of shapes will be quickly discarded by the child but the second one will cause a serious problem to the preoperational child. Heading to the concrete operational stage - The blue triangle (1) Placez les formes illustrées ci-haut devant lenfant.

While the concrete operational child will be troubled by the blue triangles, the preoperational child will quickly place them in one of your hands. Ask him to explain his choice. He will probably say: « Since its blue, it goes in your left hand ». When you ask him to name the type of shape, he will answer that its a triangle. Remind him that triangles must go in the other hand. He will change the blue triangle to the other hand. When you ask him to explain his new choice, he will tell you that triangles must go in the right hand.

Remind him that the shape is blue and that the blue shapes must go in the other hand. If he moves them again, ask the same questions as before. If he moves the shapes two more times, wait 3 to 7 days before proceeding to the next exercise. Heading to the concrete operational stage - The blue triangle (3) Rappelez-lui alors que cette pièce est bleue et que les bleues vont dans lautre main.

Before the second move, children who are almost concrete operational will act like this: 1.They will want to put the blue triangles aside, but tell them that they must placed them in your hands. 2. They will take two blue triangles and place one in each hand. As before, tell them that the blue triangles must be placed in the left hand.

3. They will join your hands together and place the blue triangles where your hands meet. They will explain their choice by saying that, in this case, the blue triangles are in both hands. These children will have taken a huge step towards the concrete operational stage. Heading to the concrete operational stage - The blue triangle (5) 3.

Ask the child if both parallel lines are of the same length or if one is longer than the other. Ask him to justify his choice. If he answers that they are of equal length because one exceeds on the right and the other exceeds on the left, he demonstrates that hes concrete operational or on the verge of becoming so.

The preoperational child will tell you that one of the lines is longer than the other since it exceeds on one side. Tell him that the same argument shows that the other line is longer since it exceeds on the other side. He will change his mind. Use the same argument again. Repeat this sequence 3 times only. If the child changes his mind each time, put an end to the exercise. Heading to the concrete operational stage - The parallel lines (2) Lenfant pré-opératoire mentionnera quune ligne est plus grande parce quelle dépasse dun côté.

To the question: « Which line contains the most Smarties? » the preoperational child will usually answer by only taking into account the length of the lines, forgetting the space between consecutive Smarties.

Ask the child to choose one of the rows and that he will be allowed to eat the Smarties from that row. You will eat the Smarties from the other row. Ask him to explain his choice.

If he chooses the shorter line, tell him that the other line is longer. If he answers that the there is more space between consecutive Smarties, this means that he takes into account both the length of the line and the space between the Smarties. Hes concrete operational or on the verge of becoming so.

If his answer only takes into account the length of the line, he will choose the first one. If it only takes into account the space between the Smarties, he will choose the second one. Make sure that he explains his choice.

Tell the child that you will both eat the Smarties from your respective rows. Tell him that you will eat them one by one, at the same time. « When you eat one, I eat one ». Ask him who will finish first.

For a true cognitive conflict to take place, remember that there must be two opposing ideas that a person truly believes in. In this case, make sure that the child explains why he chose that particular row and why he believes that you will finish eating the Smarties first.

Start eating the Smarties slowly. Between Smarties, its normal that the child looks elsewhere. Things will change when he picks up his eight Smarties. Check his face but say nothing. When you will eat your next Smarties, the conflict will be obvious Heading to the concrete operational stage - Smarties (7) Procédez à la dégustation, lentement, cest une dégustation.

Slowly eat your last three Smarties. Tell him that theyre excellent, even though its almost cruel… No! The goal is to make him realize that something is wrong with his way of thinking. But he already realized this. Heading to the concrete operational stage - Smarties (8) Dégustez lentement les 3 Smarties quil vous reste. Mentionnez à lenfant quelles sont excellentes. Cest presque du sadisme … Non!

Do the exercise again by placing the Smarties as shown. If the child links Smarties from one row to those of the other row using his finger, hes on the verge of becoming concrete operational and will choose the shorter line. Start eating and go to the next exercise.

Its also possible that this time, the child will immediately choose the shortest row and base his choice on the length of the row or the space between Smarties. Start eating like before and go to the next exercise once the cognitive conflict is obvious.

This example shows two cardboard squares of identical dimensions. When the child looks at the left figure, he thinks that the red square is bigger since it exceeds the other one. After turning the left figure around so as to get the right figure, the child changes his mind. The blue square is now bigger since its corners exceed the other square. Heading to the concrete operational stage - The squares (1) La figure illustre deux carrés de carton de dimensions identiques.

To get a true cognitive conflict, you must know that once a child moves a square, its not the same square in his mind anymore. The fact that both squares can be perfectly superimposed will not stop him from coming back to the wrong answers mentioned previously, once the squares are placed as shown above.

Hold a mirror in one hand while holding the squares in the other. Make sure that the child sees the two squares and their reflection in the mirror without having to move. Since the reflection corresponds to the back of the squares (right figure above) and what he sees in your left hand corresponds to the left figure above, the conflict is created.

The important thing for now is the childs perception of the conflict. Its most probable that he will now conclude that the squares are identical. If he doesnt, his brain will do the rest of the work because he knows that theres a contradiction and our brains are designed to solve contradictions. Heading to the concrete operational stage - The squares (4) Pour linstant, limportant est cette perception du conflit..

Pour equal quantities of juice in two glasses of different shapes so that the quantity of juice in one glass rises higher than in the other. Ask the child to choose the glass with the most juice and ask him to explain his answer.

If his answer takes into account both the height and the width of the glasses, the child is concrete operational or on the verge of becoming so. There is no need to push this experience further. If he chooses a glass because of either its height or its width, make sure that he explains his reasoning before the next step.

In this new situation, tell the child that hell be allowed to drink the content of the glass he chooses. Ask him to explain his choice. Tell him also that you will drink the content of the other glass. « Who will drink the most juice and why? » Heading to the concrete operational stage - The juice glasses (3) Dites à lenfant quil pourra boire tout le contenu du verre quil va choisir. Pourquoi? Vers lopératoire Les verres à jus (3)

Its possible that the significant difference between the two glasses will bring the child to choose the most advantageous one. If this is the case, try to make him change his mind by showing that the juice rises to a higher level in the other glass. If he maintains his choice, his thinking is evolving. If he changes his mind, hell have to face a new conflict.

Start drinking. If the child chose the left glass, drink slowly and observe him once hes done. While youll be enjoying every sip of your beverage, hell be experiencing a shocking contradiction. What does he think now? Heading to the concrete operational stage - The juice glasses (5) Procédez à la dégustation.

The child must complete the left grid by adding the missing shape to the centre cell. The two models on the right show possible solutions. The child only takes into account the vertical or the horizontal dimension and will reproduce one of the shapes that are adjacent to the center.

When he explains his choice, its obvious that the child chooses the shape next to it horizontally or vertically. Let him explain clearly before turning the grid and indicating that he should have chosen another shape. Heading to the concrete operational stage - The grid (2).

If he has a change of mind, return to the original position. If he doesnt change his mind, make him see the contradiction between the last explanation and the present solution where the repeated shape is not the top one but rather the bottom one. Repeat this operation no more than 2 times if he doesnt adjust his thinking properly. Heading to the concrete operational stage - The grid (3).

Heading to the concrete operational stage - The animals (1) To the question: « Are there more lions or more animals? », the preoperational child answers that there are more lions (3) since there are only 2 animals. He cannot understand that lions can be lions and animals at the same time.

Heading to the concrete operational stage - The animals (2) Its then easily understandable that, when confronted with the two digit number 23, the child cannot understand that digit 2 represents both « groups of 10 » and units at the same time.

Heading to the concrete operational stage - The animals (3) This test is a necessary prerequisite to learning the concept of position value.

Heading to the concrete operational stage - The animals (4) Given the importance of this test, it should not be used as a learning tool similar to the ones we discussed earlier.

Heading to the concrete operational stage - The animals (5) The animal test can be used as soon as the child has clearly been successful in two consecutive tests mentioned earlier, without regard to the order of the tests.

Heading to the concrete operational stage - The animals (6) Each use of the animal test should be done with a different theme.
