Part of this information will be familiar to you if you have already been working at CERN. The goal of this presentation is not to show you all the available services but only the few of immediate interest to you But more interesting maybe to show you where you can get help and more information to find your way around.

This is created automatically once your HR formalities have been completed. At that point you need to activate your primary account: Either by passing at the Service Desk with your access card and use the dedicated booth to activate your primary account Or call the Service Desk (see later for contact information). They will ask you to provide: an external address and a copy of your ID You will be provided a computer account and a mail account, both sharing the same temporary password. You have 3 days to change the temporary password you will be provided And you have 5 days you follow a computing security course and sign the computing rules called Operational Circular n5 You can do these actions from the portal:

This is possible, but first you need to register/declare your device on the network pages. This is simple but indispensable step. -- You do not need to connect your printer, WiFi hotspot, rooter. IT offers a lot of central services to print anywhere, to connect anywhere. Do make use of these services and if you notice any missing feature or problem let us know so that we can take the corrective actions or extend the services. The CERN network seam to be open, and it is so to some extend, but it is not unmanaged. The actions performed on the network are monitored for our security. And there are a set of rules you must follow.

6 Suivez les règles informatiques
Dans le milieu académique du CERN (comme à la maison) vous êtes responsable de la sécurité de vos ordinateurs, fichiers, programmes, services L’ équipe de sécurité informatique et le département IT sont là pour vous aider dans cette tâche Lisez & suivez le document Circulaire Opérationnelle N°5 Votre activité ne doit pas être illégale, commerciale, politique, offensive N'est pas autorisé : consultation de matériel pornographique ou autre matériel illicite (e.g. incitation à la violence, discrimination) As at home, at CERN you are responsible of the security of your devices, files, programs and services. The IT security team and all the IT services are ready to help you to fulfill this responsibility. In order to activate your account you will have to read and sign the Operational Circular n5. Do follow them. The rules are common sense. Your activities should not be illegal, commercial, politic offensive,… We can not access pornographic or illicit material.

You can install it on your personal laptop Do scan and update your devices on a regular basis Be careful with mail and web Stop – think and only then click Do not open suspicious or unexpected attachments Protect your passwords They are personal Make them complex and long Do not reuse them (across accounts and over time) Respect copyright Do not redistribute protected material Avoid sharing applications and hosting services

Take advantage of the help and trainings offered to secure what you develop and deploy

9 The training catalogue offers courses on safety and security:
The first one called “ safe and Web browsing” course. It is very short but dense and interesting. I was surprised to discover hard to find traps in and web pages. This one is for everyone. Otherwise there is a list of subjects to help you design safe applications. Although providing safe services is the responsibility of IT, designing safe applications is your.

DeskTop supportés et recommandés W7 (NICE) : SLC Scientific Linux CERN (Red Hat Enterprise Linux) : Gestion centralisée des machines Computer Management Framework (CMF): mises à jours / répertoires Home / répertoires par département / sauvegarde des données DFS (Distributed File System) AFS (Andrew File System) Supporté mais pas géré Mac : Egroup: Non supporté mais ‘community fora’ (Android, Ios) For your desktop there are 2 recommended and supported platforms: Windows 7 Scientific Linux, which is based on Red Hat Enterprise Linux With these services you have a centrally managed computer with regular updates and security patches. You also have central file systems for your home directory and files: DFS AFS It is recommended to use the central storage: Your data is backed up In case of infection your local PC and local drive will be reinstalled and your local data on the local drive lost MAC is also supported but not managed. This means that you do not receive centrally the patches and security updates. But you have access to the central file servers DFS and AFS. Andriod and Ios are not supported. There are community fora.

Also used in authorization scheme Web services if you need to setup a web server Lxplus for the central Linux login server Windows Terminal Server for a similar service on Windows You also have access to a range of collaborative tools: CDS contains all documents, physics papers, photos, bulletin. This presentation is in there Indico to organize meetings and conferences. The agenda on this induction session is there Vidyo for video conferencing The central print service that allows to print on any printer from any desktop Network service. This is what you will use to declare your mobile device on the CERN network EDMS, the engineering document management system

This is the place to come for help on any subject, computing or water leak. You can type in your problem or question and you will be taken to a FAQ or the relevant service that takes care of the issue. Behind this service we have a first line support that can answer your request directly (e.g. your account activation) or make sure it is directed to the relevant service (e.g. my heating does not work). You can access them from the CERN Service Portal page This is where all incidents and interventions are announced. You can use it in 2 cases: You notice a problem in a service. If it is listed in this page then you have nothing to do, as the service managers are aware of the incident, or are performing the intervention. You can follow the progress as they update the items If you want to plan an intervention in your services, you can check here if no other conflicting work is planned at the same time The CERN Alerter Used to push important information to targeted users or to all users. It can be computing information, or logistic information (e.g. road problem because of heavy snow) This is by default on all centrally managed PCs. For Mac and Linux users, please look a that the KB article in the CERN Service Portal The Bulletin. This is the internal news paper. You find here information on The weekly word from the DG News of the lab Training news L’Echo, the staff association paper News from the CERN clubs Last but not least: Official news. This is the only section that you are deemed to have read. If you have no time to ready any other part, do take few minutes to ready this section each week.
