It replaces names of places introduced by PREPOSITIONS OF PLACE such as à, en, dans, chez, etc. Like other object pronouns, y comes BEFORE the verb, except in affirmative commands. Note the word order in negative sentences. Je n’y vais pas. Je n’y suis pas allé. Note the position of y in affirmative commands. There is liaison between the verb and y. On va au stade?
