3 As we begin our study of French verb formations, it is important to note that in French there are three basic types of verb: (1)-ER verbs (2)-IR verbs (3)-RE verbs We begin today by studying the formation of the regular –ER verb. Take, for example, the French verb marcher (to walk). The infinitive form of the verb is composed of a stem and the verb ending: Infinitive form of the verb: marcher Stem: march- Ending: -er MARCHER To conjugate the verb in the present tense, it is necessary to take the stem of the verb and to add new endings as follows:

5 Fumer Peut-être Van Gogh fume sa pipe pour soulager son mal d’oreille.
