2 Les objectifs: To refresh how we form and use the imperfect
Remind you / introduce you to the conditional tense

3 D’abord, l’imparfait ... L’imparfait is used to describe an ongoing event in the past: I used to live in France, … It was sunny, … When I was younger, ... by contrast, the passé composé is used to talk about events / specific actions.

4 former l’imparfait parler – to speak nous parlons parl___ je parlais
1st, take the nous form and chop off the ending –ons parler – to speak nous parlons parl___ je parlais tu parlais il / elle parlait nous parlions vous parliez ils / elles parlaient then add the imparfait endings je __ais tu __ais il __ait nous __ions vous __iez ils ___ aient

5 Put these sentences into the imparfait
Il (voyager) chaque année en Australie. Tu (faire) du sport a l’école? Nous (être) enchantés de notre expédition. (irregular!) Ils (boire) du café noir le matin. 9 Mixing the tenses for maximum effect.
The imparfait is also used to describe something that was going on in the past when another event or action (in the passé composé) interrupted it. I was reading my book when the doorbell rang. He was walking down the street when lightning struck.

Elle regardait la télévision quand soudain elle a entendu un grand bruit. She was watching the telly when suddenly she heard a loud noise. Il faisait ses devoirs quand son frère est arrivé. Ils étaient à la montagne depuis une semaine quand ils ont décidé d’aller au bord de la mer.

11 Put the verbs into the imparfait
Je (dormir) quand le chat a sauté sur mon lit. Nous (bavarder) depuis une heure quand il est arrivé. Ils (danser) quand la musique s’est arrêtée. Il (réfléchir) quand une idée lui a traversé l’esprit. I used to play tennis every Thursday you were reading when the phone rang (sonner) the restaurant was crowded (bondé) it was cold in the mountains they looked tired (avoir l’air fatigué) the play was fascinating (la pièce ...) She knew they were wrong (avoir tort).

13 Keypoints of the imparfait
remember the endings use it right – opinions, ongoing past events, old habits Mix it with the passé composé understand its meaning when you hear / read it understand its difference to pc je __ais tu __ais il __ait nous __ions vous __iez ils ___ aient imparfait passé composé event happened often (repeated) continuing, unfinished event description and opinion event happened once finished and completed event series of distinct events

14 le conditionnel Another tense? What’s this used for then?
Make a polite request – je voudrais express a wish or suggestion – ce serait génial when a condition is implied, i.e. if I were... Nous irions a Rome si nous pouvions. note that the “si” part uses the imparfait

15 And how do we make this up?
start with the “stem” of the future tense manger partir mettre ir- aur- fer- ser- then add the imparfait endings je __ais tu __ais il __ait nous __ions vous __iez ils ___ aient Je mangerais beaucoup de chocolat. Nous aurions une grande maison moderne. Ils feraient du shopping tous les jours.

Si j’avais beaucoup d’argent, j’achèterais une maison énorme en Australie.  e.g.: If I had lots of money, I would buy … La maison aurait douze chambres. Il y aurait un grand garage pour ma collection des voitures de sport, ça veut dire mes Ferrari Ma maison idéale aurait un cinéma et donc je pourrais regarder mes films préférés tous les jours. La maison serait très belle, moderne et confortable.   Si j’étais très riche, j’habiterais près de la mer et j’irais à la plage et je ferais de la planche à voile. Si je gagnais beaucoup d’argent, je donnerais un palais à mes parents.
