Venir and the passé récent When a form of venir is followed by de + infinitif, it means the action just happened. This is called the passé récent. Je viens de prendre mon dîner. (I just had my dinner) Nous venons de regarder le film. (We just watched the movie)

Venir and the passé récent Venir can be used with an infinitive to say that someone has come to do something. Papa est venu me chercher. (Dad came to pick me up) Elle venait nous rendre visite. (She used to come visit us)

Venir and the passé récent The verbs devenir (to become) and revenir (to come back) are conjugated like venir. They, too, take être in the passé composé. The verbs tenir (to hold), maintenir (to maintain), and retenir (to keep, to retain, to remember) are also conjugated like venir. However, they take avoir in the passé composé.

Venir and the passé récent A command form of tenir is often used when handing something to someone. Tiens, une belle orange pour toi. (Here’s a nice orange for you). Votre sac est tombé! Tenez, Madame! (Your bag fell! Here, ma’am.)

Depuis, pendant, il y a + [time] To say that something happened at a certain time ago in the past, use il y a + [time] Il y a une heure, on était à la cantine. (An hour ago, we were at the cafeteria) Il a visité Paris il y a deux ans. (He visited Paris two years ago)

Depuis, pendant, il y a + [time] To say that something happened for a particular period of time that has ended, use pendant + [time period]. Often the verb will be in the passé composé. Salim a fait la vaisselle pendant deux heures. (Salim washed the dishes for two hours) Les équipes ont joué au foot pendant un mois. (The teams played soccer for one month)

Depuis, pendant, il y a + [time] To say that something has been going on since a particular time and continues into the present, use depuis + [time period, date, or starting point]. Unlike its English equivalent, the verb in the French construction is usually in the present tense. Elle danse depuis son arrivée à la fête. (She has been dancing since her arrival at the party) Depuis quand passez-vous l’été à Québec? (Since when have you been spending summers in Quebec?)

The verbs devoir, vouloir, and pouvoir The verbs devoir (to have to [must]; to owe), vouloir (to want), and pouvoir (to be able to [can]) are all irregular. They all take avoir in the passé composé.

vouloir Bien vouloir can be used to express willingness. Tu veux prendre de la glace? (Do you want to have some ice cream?) Oui, je veux bien prendre de la glace. (Yes, I’ll gladly have some ice cream.) Voulez-vous dîner avec nous demain soir? (Do you want to have dinner with us tomorrow evening?) Nous voulons bien manger avec vous demain soir. (We’d love to eat with you tomorrow evening.)
