To make a sentence that expresses a hypothetical situation, you use a si clause (si = if), the imparfait and the conditionnel. Si clause ↓ Si elle gagnait à la loterie, elle achèterait une nouvelle maison. ↑ ↑ imparfait conditionnel

The word order can be changed with no difference in meaning. Elle achèterait une nouvelle maison si elle gagnait à la loterie. Notice that the imparfait is always used in the si clause.
