3 Leçon 04.01 Le Passé Composé Régulier Until now, you have used only the present tense in your French studies. Now we are going to learn to speak about the past using the passé composé. Look at the following three sentences: Ali played football yesterday. They have visited Paris three times. We did clean the bedroom. What do they have in common? All three of these types of past tense verbs can be translated by just one verb tense in French: The Passé Composé.

4 Leçon 04.01 Le Passé Composé Régulier La Construction! In French the Passé Composé is considered a complex tense. That means that this tense will be formed using two different verbs. For example, look at the same three sentences we saw on the previous page in French: – Ali a joué au foot hier. – Ils ont visité Paris trois fois. – Nous avons rangé la chambre. What do you notice about this tense? Notice that we have 2 verbs that make up the past tense construction! Look at the first part of the verb. Where have you seen this before? Yes, it is the present tense of the verb Avoir.

5 Leçon 04.01 Le Passé Composé Régulier Let’s quickly review the present tense forms of avoir! J'ai Nous avons Tu asVous avez Il/elle/on a Ils/elles ont Just as we said before, we need two verbs in French to construct this passé composé tense. Along with the present tense form of avoir we will use the past participle of the main action verb…what was done in the past! What is a past participle? Let’s take a look at a few examples: – jouer joué – écouter écouté – parler parlé – finir fini – vendre vendu

6 Leçon 04.01 Le Passé Composé Régulier To form the past participle, take the infinitive (parler, attendre, vendre, finir, etc.) and do the following: For –er verbs, remove the –er and add –é. For –ir verbs, remove the –ir and add i. For –re, remove the –re and add –u. Let’s see how this works! parler vendre finir
