A direct object is the “what” of a sentence. Example: I am reading the book. What am I reading? the book The book is the direct object of this sentence. In English, “it” can replace “the book.”

En français… Je lis le livre. Je le lis. le is the direct object pronoun that replaces le livre

The direct object pronouns are : le masc/ singular la fem/ singular l’ masc/fem sing in front of vowel sound les plural

More examples… Nous écoutons la musique française. Nous l’ écoutons.

Il fait ses devoirs. Il les fait.

Two verb structure… Elles aiment regarder ce film. Elles aiment le regarder. *Notice how the pronoun goes in front of the second verb when the present or near future tense is used.

In the passé composé … Vous avez écrit la lettre. Vous l’avez écrite. *Notice how the pronoun goes in front of the first verb/ helping verb in the passé composé. Also, notice how there is an extra “e” on the past participle that agrees with the feminine direct object.

Indirect object pronouns lui / leur Lui replaces à + a person Leur replaces à + people

A indirect object is the “to whom” of a sentence. Example: I am talking to René. To whom am I talking? to Ren é To Ren é is the indirect object of this sentence. In English, to him can replace “to Ren é.”

En français… Je parle à René. Je lui parle.

More examples… Nous téléphonons à nos grands- parents. Nous leur téléphonons.

Two verb structure Elle aime écrire des lettres à ses amis. Elle aime leur écrire des lettres. *Notice how the pronoun goes in front of the second verb when the present or near future tense is used.

Passé composé Tu as parlé à ton amie hier. Tu lui as parlé hier. *Notice how the pronoun goes in front of the first verb/ helping verb in the passé compose. Also, notice how there isn’t an extra “e” on the past participle. With the indirect object pronoun, do not make the agreement.

Double pronoun replacement When replacing both the direct and indirect object in the same sentence follow this order… Le l’/lui La/leur Les/

Examples… J’écris le poème à mon ami. Je le lui écris.

Les parents aiment lire les livres à leurs enfants. Les parents aiment les leur lire.

Double pronoun in passé composé Annick a chanté la chanson à sa mère. Annick la lui a chantée.
