Le Conditionnel
MEANING When you use the conditionnel in French, it is translated in English as “would (verb)” This indicates how things could be different in the present. EX: Si j’étais gros, je perdrais du poids. (If I were fat, I would lose weight.)
FORMATION Forming the conditional in French is easy! You will just combine two tenses that you already know. Futur stem + imparfait ending = conditionnel!
FORMATION- review The futur stem is usually just the infinitive. RE verbs drop the –e from the infinitive. Irregular verb stems all end in R! The imparfait endings are –ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient No exceptions to endings.
Example- vomir Je vomirais, I would vomit Tu vomirais, you would vomit Il vomirait, he would vomit Nous vomirions, we would vomit Vous vomiriez, you (f.) would vomit Ils vomiraient, they would vomit
Example- parler Je parlerais Tu parlerais Il/Elle/On parlerait Nous parlerions Vous parleriez Ils/Elles parleraient
