Les Sports et Loisirs Les Sports et Loisirs Talking about your sport and leisure time activities in French Jadore le football.

Activities you like or dislike To say you like, dont like or prefer a sport or leisure activity, you need to use the Definite Article (le, la, l or les) with the name of the sport or activity. ex. Jadore le football. Je naime pas beaucoup la pétanque. Je déteste les cartes.

See if you know which sports these are... le football (le foot) le tennis le basketball (le basket) le rugby le cricket le badminton le ping pong le jogging le volleyball (le volley) le hockey (sur glace) football/soccer tennis basketball rugby cricket badminton table tennis jogging volleyball hockey (ice)

Yep, those were easy! How about these? la musculation la gymnastique lathlétisme (m) la natation la plongée le cyclisme/ le vélo le vélo tout terrain (VTT) la course lescalade weight training gymnastics athletics swimming diving cycling/ biking mountain biking running climbing

How about these activities? la lecture les cartes les échecs la musique la pêche le cinéma reading cards chess music fishing cinema

Tu aimes...?

Using a verb instead of a noun In English, we often use the infinitive or an -ing form of a verb, when were talking about likes and dislikes. To do this in French, use the infinitive. ex. Jaime jouer au rugby. I like playing rugby. Je naime pas regarder le sport. I dont like to watch sport. Je préfère lire. I prefer reading.

Some sports and activities are PLAYED and some are DONE - both in English and in French. For example, I may play football or cricket, but Im not going to play climbing or swimming - those are things you DO. However, in French, they always say faire du sport (literally to do sport), whereas in English we say that we play sport. Note that in both languages, you may say that you do things as well as play them, but not vice versa.

jouer à When using jouer (to play), you need to put à before the sport. If it is a le sport, you must contract à + le to au. ex. le tennisJe joue au tennis. le hockeyJe joue au hockey. Sports for which you use la do not have a contraction. ex. la pétanqueJe joue à la pétanque. If you have a plural activity, à + les = aux. ex. les cartesJe joue aux cartes. Bien sûr, you can use the infinitive, when talking about likes & dislikes. Jaime jouer au foot. I like playing football.

Fill gaps with correct form: au, aux or à la Je joue ___ foot. Je joue ___ volley. Je joue ___ cartes. Je joue ___ basket. Je joue ___ pétanque. Je joue ___ hockey. Je joue ___rugby. au aux au à la au

Quest-ce quils font? Ils jouent au hockey. Ils aiment jouer au hockey. Il joue au ping pong. Il aime jouer au ping pong.

faire de... When you are using faire with sports/activities that you DO, you need to put de before the activity. If it is a le sport, contract de + le to du. ex. le skiJe fais du ski. Note that for la or l activities, there is no contraction. ex. la lutteJe fais de la lutte. lescaladeJe fais de lescalade. Once again, you may also use the infinitive, when saying you like or dislike something. Jaime faire du ski.

du, de la or de l?? Je fais ___ course. Je fais ___ sport. Je fais ___ cyclisme. Je fais ___ équitation. Je fais ___ natation. Je fais ___ judo. Je fais ___ musculation. Je fais ___ escalade. de la du de l de la du de la de l
