Transcription de la présentation:

Pronouns Pronouns are words used to replace nouns or proper nouns . They are really useful to avoid repetition.

Indirect object pronoun Pierre lui répond. Pierre répond à Uma. subject verb Object indirect À + qqn Pierre lui a répondu. Nous parlons aux policiers. Nous leur parlons. verb subject Object indirect À + qqn Nous leur avons parlé.

How can we spot when we need an indirect pronoun? Verbs which require an indirect pronoun are followed by the preposition à in French, eg répondre à. In French these pronouns can only refer to a person, not a thing

Some common verbs (you just have to learn them!!) donner à quelqu’un to give (to) someone offrir à qqn to offer (to) someone envoyer à qqn to send (to) s.o téléphoner à qqn to phone s.o. parler à qqn to talk to s.o. dire à qqn to say to s.o./tell s.o. écrire à qqn to write to s.o. demander à qqn to ask s.o. répondre à qqn to reply/answer (to) s.o.

Not all verbs which take an indirect pronoun in English do so in French. I love Bob J’aime Bob I talk to Bob Je parle à Bob I love him Je l’aime I talk to him Je lui parle indirect direct direct indirect I wait for Bob J’attends Bob I tell Bob Je dis à Bob I wait for him Je l’attends I tell him Je lui dis Chercher, écouter, regarder

The direct and indirect pronouns Me/m’ Me To me Te/t’ you To you Le / l’ Him / it Lui To him/to it La / l’ Her / it To her/to it nous us Nous To us vous Les Them leur To them

Traduis You write to him. Tu lui écris. She phoned her. I will talk to her. You talked to them. She gives it to me. Sylvain invited her for my birthday. Tu lui écris. Elle lui a téléphoné. Je vais lui parler. Tu leur as parlé. Elle me le donne. Sylvain l’a invitée pour mon anniversaire.

Place du pronom avec tous les temps Tu envoies la photo à ta copine ? Oui, je lui envoie la photo. Non, je ne lui envoie pas la photo. Je lui ai envoyé la photo. Je ne lui ai pas envoyé. Je vais lui envoyer la photo.

Rule time Indirect object pronouns 1. A pronoun replaces a noun 2. An object pronoun replaces a noun that is the object of the verb. 3. Indirect means that the object of the verb is linked to the verb by a preposition, usually à 4. The indirect pronoun goes in the same position as the direct pronoun (i.e. directly before the verb – or the auxiliary in the perfect tense) 5. When there are two verbs, the indirect pronoun goes before the infinitive 6. The key to get it right is to know whether the French verb has a preposition or not – which is not always the same as in English
