Les vêtements L’origine des mots

Les vêtements – l’origine des mots This PowerPoint contains: Slides 3 to 6: etymology – the French origin of some English words in the field of clothing, with a matching exercise Slides 7 to 8: match French words for clothing with their illustrations, (audio files included) Slides 9 to 10: a recap of all vocabulary, with audio files, and a translation

Les vêtements Qu’est-ce qu’ils ont en commun ? Écrivez les mots en anglais sous chaque illustration. What do all these items have in common? First, can you label each item in English: A jacket / tartan /a robe / a bonnet / a boot / a scarf / denim-jeans / a blouse /fashion Les vêtements

L’origine des mots … A jacket / tartan /a robe / a bonnet / a boot / a scarf / denim-jeans / a blouse /fashion Vous avez deviné ? Et oui, c’est correct, tous ces mots ont une origine française ! Did you guess that all these words have a French origin? - Tiretaine = "strong, coarse fabric" - Jaquet = "short coat with sleeves" - Robe = "long, loose outer garment" - Botte = “a high, thick shoe” - Blouse = "workman's or peasant's smock" - Bonet = "kind of cloth used as a headdress” - Escarpe = “pilgrim's purse suspended from the neck” - Façon = “form, make, outward appearance” - Gênes* = the French word for Genoa (Italian port) - de Nimes* = “from the French city of Nîmes” *That’s right, even the words “jeans”, “denim” and “tartan” originate from French words, incroyable, non !!! The story of the “blue jeans” begins in the city of Genoa, in Italy, famous for its cotton corduroy manufacture. “Jeans” fabric from Genoa (at that time) was in fact very similar to corduroy. Genoese sailors started to use it to cover and protect their goods on the docks from the weather. During the Republic of Genoa, this fabric was exported by Genoese sailors throughout Europe. Gênes, the French word for Genoa, may therefore be the origin of the word "jeans” as, in the French city of Nîmes, weavers tried to reproduce the fabric exactly, but without success. However, with experimentation, and through trial and error, they developed another fabric that became known as “denim”, literally "de Nîmes " meaning “from Nîmes”. It is only at the end of the nineteenth century that the now so popular “blue jeans” arrived in the United States!

L’origine des mots … Maintenant, faites correspondre le mot anglais avec le mot français d’origine.
