Les compléments directs sont: Te Le La Nous Vous Les Me You Him, it Her, it Us Them

Les pronoms compléments directs Replace the direct object Are placed in front of the verb from which they receive the action The past participles agree with them in gender and number Luc voit Sylvie Luc la voit Luc va la voir Luc l’ a vue hier Luc ne la voit pas Il ne va pas la voir Il ne l’a pas vue

Les compléments indirects sont: Lui Leur To him To her To them

Le pronoms complément indirects Replace à + a person Are placed in front of the verb from which they receive the action NO agreement is made with them Note placement in negative sentences Luc parle à Sylvie Luc lui parle Luc veut lui parler Luc lui a parlé hier Il ne lui parle pas Il ne va pas lui parler Il ne lui a pas parlé

START YOUR NOTES HERE La norme: Comparisons 4.1: Understanding the nature of langue through making comparisons La question essentielle: - What does the pronoun « y » replace? - How does « y » translate into English? - What is the difference between the pronouns « y » and « lui » and « leur »?

Le pronom “Y” Je vais à la plage J’y vais Je réponds à la question J’y réponds Je vais chez ma tante Replaces à + place à + thing expressions of location

“Y” generally means: “there”, “to it” or “it”

“Y” The pronoun “Y” follows of the rules of placement for all of the other pronouns NO agreement is made with “Y” and the past participle J’y vais Je veux y aller J’y suis allé Je n’y vais pas Je ne veux pas y aller Je n’y suis pas allé

Some idiomatic expressions using “Y” Ça y est! That’s it! Finished! Alright! That’s it! J’y suis! I get it!

La difference: Y - Replaces: - à + A THING - à + a thing - expressions of location Means: THERE, TO IT, TO THEM Lui & Leur - Replace: à + A PERSON Means: - to him, to her, - to them

MORE NOTES: La norme: Comparisons 4.1: La question essentielle: Understanding the nature of langue through making comparisons La question essentielle: What does « en » replace in a sentence? How does « en » translate into English?

Le pronom “EN” Replaces: a partitive construction (de la, du, des = some) A noun qualified by a specific quantity All other phrases introduced by de referring to a thing Je voudrais du pain J’en voudrais Il a deux frères Il en a deux Il vient de Rome Il en vient Il parle de son travail Il en parle

“EN” NOTE: When “de” is followed by a person or specific people, a stress pronoun is used instead of “en” Il parle de sa fille Il parle d’elle Il est fier de Pierre Il est fier d’lui

“EN” More notes! In cases in English when “some” and “any” are not used, “en” must be used in French: Tu as des oeufs? Do you have any eggs? Oui, j’en ai. Yes, I do.

Finalement! “En” follows the same rules for placement as with all other pronouns. “En” generally translates as “some” “any” “of it” “from there” “about it” “of them”

Y & En dans une phrase Note order: me te le lui Subject + nous + la + leur + y + en + verb vous les

Most common use: Il y en a = There are ….of them Il y a combien d’élèves dans la classe? Il y en a 40! There are to (of them)
