Verbs What is the function of a Verb? What is an infinitive? A VERB is the part of speech in a sentence that conveys the ACTION that is taking place. What is an infinitive? In English AND in French, verbs come in different forms; the INFINITIVE (the unconjugated form) is the MOST BASIC FORM of any verb. This is the form of the verb BEFORE you place it in a SENTENCE. If you want to look up a verb in the dictionary, you must look for it’s infinitive form. In English, the translation/definition of any infinitive will always have “to...” in front of the definition.

Conjugating –ER Verbs French When we want to use a verb in a sentence, we need to CONJUGATE this verb, so that it makes sense. How do we do this in French? By changing the ending of the verb ENGLISH to like  She likes hotdogs. FRENCH aimer  Elle aime les hot-dogs. French

Why are –ER verbs considered regular? Regular Verbs Why are –ER verbs considered regular? because most follow a set pattern for conjugation. Can you think of the other two regular verb groups? -IR and -RE Can you think of the two times the pattern changes slightly? -ER verbs that end in -GER (manger) and stem-changing boot verbs that add an accent (acheter) What steps do we take to conjugate –ER verbs?
