French Hammer the Grammar Aim: to be confident using the present tense To formulate accurate sentences using the present tense of …ir / …re/ …er verbs To understand how to conjugate er / ir / re verbs To recognise patterns

PRESENT TENSE  to talk about something you are doing now or that you do regularly  i i i in English there are 2 present tenses eg: I go home / I am going home In French, there is only one present tense eg: Je vais à la maison

 f f f first you need the infinitive of the verb  this is the verb as you find it in the dictionary.  i i i in English the infinitive is made of “to” + verb (eg: to go). in French, there is no “to” at the front; we look at the end of the verb. BUILDING THE PRESENT

2- remove the last 2 letters of the infinitive (ie: -er; -ir; re) 1- choose a personal pronoun (who is doing the action?): je; tu; il; elle; nous; vous; ils; elles I; you; he; she; we; you; they; they 3- replace those 2 letters with the ending matching the pronoun you chose PRESENT TENSE

jouer je  -joue tu  -joues il  -joue elle  -joue nous  -jouons vous  -jouez ils  -jouent elles  -jouent to play “ ER” VERBS those ending in ER

finir je  -finis tu  finis il  finit elle  finit nous  finissons vous  finissez ils  finissent elles  finissent to finish “ IR” VERBS those ending in IR

vendre je  vends tu  vends il  vend (none) elle  vend (none) nous  vendons vous  vendez ils  vendent elles  vendent to sell “ RE” VERBS those ending in RE

Some of the verbs you have learned “behave” slightly differently: faire (to do) je fais tu fais il/elle fait nous faisons vous faîtes ils/elles font lire (to read) je lis tu lis il/elle lit nous lisons vous lisez ils/elles lisent aller (to go) je vais tu vas il/elle va nous allons vous allez ils/elles vont Exceptions!

Jouer – to play Je joue Tu joues Il joue Elle joue Nous jouons Vous jouez Ils jouent Elles jouent Finir –to finish Je finis Tu finis Il finit Elle finit Nous finissons Vous finissez Ils finissent Elles finissent Vendre – to sell Je vends tu vends Il vend Elle vend Nous vendons Vous vendez Ils vendent Elles vendent

Je veux Tu veux Il veut Elle veut Nous voulons Vous voulez Ils veulent Elles veulent Je peux Tu peux Il peut Elle peut Nous pouvons Vous pouvez Ils peuvent Elles peuvent Je dois Tu dois Il doit Elle doit Nous devons Vous devez Ils doivent Elles doivent

J’ai Tu as Il a Elle a Nous avons Vous avez Ils ont Elles ont I have You have He has She has We have You have They have Je suis Tu es Il est Elle est Nous sommes Vous êtes Ils sont Elles sont I am You are He is She is We are You are They are

Je vais Tu vas Il va Elle va Nous allons Vous allez Ils vont Elles vont I go You go He goes She goes We go You go They go Je fais Tu fais Il fait Elle fait Nous faisons Vous faites Ils font Elles font I do/make You do/make He /she does / makes We do/make You do/make They do / make
