Les Pronoms Disjoints

Qu’est-ce que c’est un pronom disjoint? A “pronom disjoint”, a stress pronoun, is a pronoun that is separated from the verb and appears in different positions in the sentence. It is used to place emphasis on the subject of the sentence (the person completing the action). Ex: Voilà son livre à elle. Viens avec moi!

Les Pronoms Disjoints Pronoms Sujets Pronoms Disjoints singulier je tu il elle moi (me) toi (you) lui (him) elle (her) pluriel on nous vous ils elles nous (us) vous (you) eux (them) elles (them)

Quand est-ce qu’on utilise les pronoms disjoints? We use stress pronouns in four main cases. To stress a particular noun or person After “c’est” To respond to a question After prepositions

1. To stress a particular noun or person In this case, stress pronouns are used for emphasis on a noun or person: Ex: Moi, je détèste les pois! Il ne parle jamais en classe, lui. Elles n’ont jamais de chance, elles. Louise, elle, elle ne se trompe jamais. Nous, on écoute toujours en classe.

2. After “c’est” Stress pronouns may be used after the expression “c’est”, meaning “it is”: Ex: C’est toi qui aimes les chats? Qui va au théàtre? C’est eux? C’est à moi que vous voulez parler? C’est elle qui a raconté toute l’histoire.

3. To respond to a question Stress pronouns may be used on their own to answer a question: Ex: Qui a téléphoné? Lui. (him) Qui veut du chocolat? Nous! (us!) Qui va en France? Elle. (her) Qui veut y aller? Eux. (them)

4. After prepositions Stress pronouns are often used after prepositions to refer to people: Ex: Avec qui partez-vous? Avec toi. Tu viens au match de baseball? - Oui, je viens avec vous. Où est Charles? Il est chez lui. À qui penses-tu? À elle.
