Transcription de la présentation:

Negatives ‘I ‘I don’t know’ ‘Je ‘Je ne sais pas’.

How are they written ? As we know, negatives in French are made up of two words, ‘ne’ and something else (e.g. ‘pas’) These words are usually written around the verb. Je ne ne pense pas. Nous n’ n’ avons pas.

Special rules for negatives: Be aware that in French, when using negatives negatives relating to PLURAL PLURAL things, we use ‘de’ after the negative (not (not ‘des’), and we drop the reference to the number. J’ ai deux freres. Je n nn n’ ai pas de freres.

Negatives in Different Tenses. When an AUXILARY AUXILARY verb is used, the negative construction is placed around that auxilary, NOT NOT around the main verb. Je ne vais pas acheter une jupe. Elle n’ est pas partie. Nous n’ avons pas perdu. Je n’ avais pas acheté. Il n’ aurait pas vendu le velo.

Negatives & direct / indirect object pronouns. The negative construction goes around the object pronoun AND AND the verb clause / auxilary verb. Je ne l’ aime pas. Il ne l’ a pas vendu. Tu n’ y vas pas visiter. Elle ne lui donne pas. Je ne le lui a aa ai pas donné

Some more special cases… Negative reflexives: Tu ne te leves pas. Negative reflexive imperative (command): Ne te leves pas !

And another special case… ONLY ne …. que = ONLY Je n’ ai qu’un frere Nous n’avons acheté que du pain.

Negatives (level 7): Infinitive Negation: ne pas sortir ne pas tomber Personne ne pense … Rien ne change. Aucun homme ne croit... Pas une femme ne sait… Subject Negation: Not to go out Not to fall No-one thinks… Nothing changes. Not any man believes No woman knows..

More useful negatives. Ne … rien Ne … personne Ne … pas que Ne … pas encore nothing no-one not only not yet / still not On n’ a pas encore fini !

Emphatic Negatives (level 8): Ne … aucun(e) Ne … guere Ne … jamais Ne … nulle part Ne … ni … ni Ne … plus Ne … plus jamais Ne … plus guere Ne … plus rien Ne … jamais rien Ne … jamais personne Not any (at all) Hardly / scarcely Never nowhere Neither...neither...nor No longer / no more Never again / no longer ever No longer hardly Nothing more Never anything Never anybody

Now give these a go ! Translate these phrases to French. 1)I haven’t got anything. 2)We didn’t go. 3)No-one thinks that it’s good. 4)Nothing happens. 5)I’ve not yet finished. 6)You will only visit once. 7)She is never there. 8)He’s hardly happy. …Bravo !! 1)Je n’ ai rien. 2)Nous ne sommes pas allé(e)s. 3)Personne ne pense que c’est bien. 4)Rien ne se passe. 5)Je n’ ai pas encore fini. 6)Vous ne allez que visiter une fois. 7)Elle n’ est jamais là. 8)Il n’ est guère content.

So try these too ! Translate these phrases into French too. 1)There’s nothing to say. 2)I’ve no longer anything to do. 3)There’s never anyone there. 4)She didn’t buy anything (at all). 5)He bought nothing. 6)She has hardly played it. 7)She no longer hardly plays it. 8)She doesn’t live anywhere. …Well done !! 1)Il n’ y a rien à dire. 2)Je n’ ai plus rien à faire 3)Il n’ y a jamais personne là. 4)Elle n’ a aucune acheté. 5)Il n’ a rien acheté. 6)Elle ne l’a guère joué. 7)Elle ne le joue plus guère. 8)Elle n’ habite nulle part.

That’s all folks !
