Les adjectifs pr é nominaux In French, most adjectives come after the nouns they describe. There are, however, some adjectives that come before their nouns. A general rule that can be applied is called the BANGS rule: B = beauty A = age N = number G = goodness S = size These adjectives come before the noun!

Quelques adjectifs pr é nominaux joli/jolie belle/bel/beau premier/premi è re jeune nouveau/nouvel/ nouvelle bon/bonne petit/petite dernier/derni è re vieux/vieil/vieille mauvais/mauvaise grand/grande gros/grosse

beau, nouveau, and vieux When these adjectives are placed before a noun beginning with a consonant, they use the forms you see in these examples. C’est un beau garçon. C’est un nouveau professeur. C’est un vieux livre.

Pratiquons ensemble Tournez à la page 111. Faisons les exercices 3-8 ensemble.

Les adjectifs pr é nominaux au pluriel As we have seen, some adjectives come before their nouns. These adjectives follow the BANGS rule and, like all adjectives in French, must agree in gender and in number with their nouns. Each of these adjectives has four forms: m.s., f.s., m.pl., and f.pl.

Les adjectifs pr é nominaux au pluriel Adjectives like jeune that end in e have the same form for both masculine and feminine nouns. We only have to add an -s to make them plural. Paul est jeune. Nicole est jeune. Paul et Nicole sont jeunes.

Les adjectifs pr é nominaux au pluriel Adjectives like bon and gros double the consonant and add an -e for their feminine forms. Add an -s to make them plural. Marc est bon. Marie est bonne. Ils sont bons. Elles sont bonnes. Le cochon est gros La vache est grosse. Les cochon sont gros. Les vaches sont grosses.

Les adjectifs pr é nominaux au pluriel Adjectives ending in a consonant, like petit, add and -e for their feminine form and then an -s to both masculine and feminine forms for their plurals. Paul est petit. Luc et Paul sont petits. Marie est petite. Marie et Chantal sont petites.

Les adjectifs pr é nominaux au pluriel Adjectives like bon and gros double the consonant and add an -e for their feminine forms. Add an -s to make them plural. Marc est bon. Marie est bonne. Ils sont bons. Elles sont bonnes. Le cochon est gros La vache est grosse. Les cochon sont gros. Les vaches sont grosses.

Les adjectifs pr é nominaux au pluriel Adjectives that end in -ier like dernier et premier place an accent grave over the final -e and add another -e to the adective. Add -s to make them plural. Le week-end dernier… La premi è re ann é e … Les premiers jours… Les derni è res semaines …

Les adjectifs pr é nominaux au pluriel Remember the adjectives beau, vieux, and nouveau. Their masculine plurals end in - x and their feminine forms have an -elle and add an -s for the plural. Beau (bel) beaux belle(s) Nouveau (nouvel) nouveaux nouvelle(s) Vieux (vieil) vieux vieille(s)
