2 Direct Object Pronouns A direct object receives the action of the verb, -- who? Or What? –I see the ball/je vois le ballon –It can be replaced by a pronoun to shorten the sentence I see it/je le vois

3 Spelling Pronouns must agree in gender and number with the word they are replacing –Je vois un chien = je le vois –Je regarde la télé = je la regarde –J’achète des carottes = je les achète –J’invite Paul/Paulette = je l’invite –Note, people or things

4 Placement The pronoun ususlly goes before the conjugated verb –Je le regarde –Je l’ai regardé –Ne le regarde pas! –Je ne le regarde pas –Je ne l’ai pas regardé

5 exceptions 1) sentence with an infinitive –Pronoun goes between the conjugated verb and the infinitive –Je vais le regarder –Je veux le regarder –Je ne peux pas le regarder 2) Positive command -- Pronoun goes after the verb - Regardez-le!

6 Passé composé rule Pronoun goes before avoir The past participle must agree in gender and number with the pronoun (like être verbs/subject) J’ai regardé la télé -- Je l’ai regardée J’ai regardé des films -- Je les ai regardés

7 Indirect Object Pronouns Indirect objects are introduced usually by a preposition and answer to whom? Or to what? –I gave the ball to Bob/J’ai donné le ballon à Bob You can shorten the sentence by replacing the object with a pronoun –I gave the ball to him/je lui ai donné le ballon

8 Lui = to him/to her Leur = to them Je leur donne le crayon Je lui réponds Note, people only
