2 A direct object is the “what” of a sentence. Example: I am reading the book. What am I reading? the book The book is the direct object of this sentence. In English, “it” can replace “the book.”

3 En français… Je lis le livre. Je le lis. le is the direct object pronoun that replaces le livre

4 The direct object pronouns are : le masc/ singular la fem/ singular l’ masc/fem sing in front of vowel sound les plural

5 More examples… Nous écoutons la musique française. Nous l’ écoutons.

6 Il fait ses devoirs. Il les fait.

7 Two verb structure… Elles aiment regarder ce film. Elles aiment le regarder. *Notice how the pronoun goes in front of the second verb when the present or near future tense is used.

8 In the passé composé … Vous avez écrit la lettre. Vous l’avez écrite. *Notice how the pronoun goes in front of the first verb/ helping verb in the passé composé. Also, notice how there is an extra “e” on the past participle that agrees with the feminine direct object.

9 Indirect object pronouns lui / leur Lui replaces à + a person Leur replaces à + people

10 A indirect object is the “to whom” of a sentence. Example: I am talking to René. To whom am I talking? to Ren é To Ren é is the indirect object of this sentence. In English, to him can replace “to Ren é.”

12 More examples… Nous téléphonons à nos grands- parents. Nous leur téléphonons.
