3 EXAMPLES – present tense All of these negative expression “sandwich” themselves around the conjugated verb of a sentence: Je ne regarde pas la télé. Il ne nettoie jamais sa chambre. Nous ne faisons rien le samedi matin. Caroline n’aime personne.

4 EXAMPLES – passé composé In the passé composé, 3 of these negative expressions sandwich the auxiliary (helping) verb. Ne… personne sandwiches the entire verbal phrase: Je n’ai pas regardé la télé. Il n’a jamais nettoyé sa chambre. Nous n’avons rien fait samedi matin. ******* Caroline n’a aimé personne. ********

5 Quelqu’un - Personne The opposite of ne… personne (no one) is quelqu’un (someone) ex: Tu invites quelqu’un? (Are you inviting someone?) Non, je n’invite personne. (No, I’m not inviting anyone.) Personne – can also be used alone to answer “No one.”

6 Quelque Chose - Rien The opposite of ne… rien (nothing, not anything) is quelque chose (something) ex: Tu fais quelque chose? (Are you doing somthing?) Non, je ne fais rien. (No, I’m not doing anything.) Rien – can also be used alone to answer “Nothing.”
