2 o The longest and most popular avenue in Paris o Famous for its numerous high-end stores and restaurants o Often described as the most beautiful avenue in the world o At the end of the avenue sits the Arc de Triomphe

3 o Located at the west end of the Champs Elysées on La place Charles de Gaule o Used to be called La Place de l’Etoile o 12 avenues extend from the Arc de Triomphe out into the city o Separates “Old Paris” from “New Paris” o Louvre on one side, financial district on the other

4 o Commissioned by Napoleon in 1806 to honor his wartime victories. o The four huge relief sculptures at the bases of the four pillars commemorate: o The Triumph of 1810 o Resistance o Peace o The Departure of the Volunteers (La Marseillaise) o Beneath the arch is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the eternal flame commemorating the dead of the two world wars.

5 o Richest art museum in the world o Home of the Mona Lisa, the Venus de Milo, and Winged Victory o Through time it has been: o a fortress o a palace o a prison o and now an art museum. o I.M. Pei, an American, is the architect of the glass pyramid outside the museum.
