The accent aigu (´) tells you to pronounce an e similar to the a in the English word date: éléphantSénégal The accent grave (`) tells you to pronounce an e like the e in the English word jet: zèbrachèque However, an accent grave over an a or u doesn’t change the sound of these letters: àoù Accents are important to spelling, pronunciation, and meaning of words.

You usually will not see accents on capital letters: étatEtat When you spell a word aloud, be sure the say the accents, as well as the letter: *Poésie. You say, “p – o – e – accent aigu – s – i – e”
