2 When talking about foods in French, it is sometimes necessary to use the PARTITIVE ARTICLE, or “some.” For example: poulet gâteau salade poisson poulet gâteau salade poisson UN UNE UN DU DE LA DU indefinite partitive

3 The French article partitif corresponds to the English some or any. It has three distinct forms: du de la de l’ DU fromage DU pain DE LA sole DE LA limonade DE L’ananas DE L’eau

4 L’article partitif is useful in many different situations. Practice by translating the following phrases: Pierre is eating some cheese  We are having some salad.  I would like some water, please.  Do you (s) want some/any milk?  Do you have any money?  Pierre mange du fromage. Nous mangeons de la salade. Je voudrais de l’eau, SVP. Veux-tu du lait? As-tu de l’argent?

5 L’article partitif is used sometimes, but not always, after the following expressions and verbs: Here is some bread.  There is some mayo.  Is there any salad?  We are buying some cheese.  Do you (s) have any lemon soda ?  He is eating some roast beef.  Will you(pl) take/have any coffee?  Do you(s) want any ice cream?  Voici du pain. Voilà de la mayonnaise. Est-ce qu’il y a de la salade? Nous achetons du fromage. Est-ce que tu as de la limonade? Il mange du rosbif. Prenez-vous du café? Est-ce qu tu veux de la glace? (voici) (voilà) (il y a) (acheter) (avoir) (manger) (prendre) (vouloir)
