6 à The preposition à has many meanings: In Patrick habite à Lyon. –Patrick lives in Lyon At Nous sommes à la piscine. –We are at the pool. To Est-ce que tu vas à Toulouse? –Are you going to Toulouse? NOTES

7 Contractions In English, we have contractions like –Dont (do + not) –Yall (you + all) –Aint (am + not) –Wont (will + not)

8 Some French contractions When you use à + some Definite articles you get a contraction (meaning: to/at/in the) –Definite articles = THE = le, la, les, l À + le = au Je vais au cinéma. À + les = aux Tu vas aux magasins. BUT (mais) À + la = à la Éric va à la piscine. À + l = à l Vous allez à lhôtel. NOTES

9 This is not only true when talking about places. You will use it a lot… Je téléphone à lami de Claire. –I call to the friend of Claire Even better: I call Claires friend. The teacher talks to the students. –Le professeur parle aux élèves.

18 To say what you are going to do in the future: Use the conjugated (changed) form of ALLER + an infinitive (not changed verb) Aller + infinitive –Je vais travailler. ( I am going to work.) –Tu vas chanter. (You are going to sing.) –Il va marcher. (He is going to walk.) –Nous allons manger. (We are going to eat.) –Vous allez voyager. (Yall are going to travel.) –Elles vont danser. (They are going to dance.) NOTES
