Chicks hatched at Monksdown Primary School! Les poussins ont éclos à Monksdown! When the eggs arrived at our school, we were so excited! Quand les oeufs sont arrivés, nous étions tellement excités!

2 Day 1. On the first day that the eggs arrived, nothing happened.
Le jour ou les oeufs sont arrivés, rien ne s’est passé. We kept watching the incubator to see if any eggs had cracked, but there was no movement at all. On a continuellement regardé la couveuse pour voir si les oeufs avaient éclos, mais pas de mouvement du tout.

3 Day 2. On the second day when we arrived in school,
we checked the incubator, but none of the eggs had changed. Le deuxième jour quand on est arrivé à l’école On a vérifié la couveuse, mais rien avait changé. The eggs had to stay in the incubator to keep at the right temperature. Les oeufs devaient rester dans la couveuse à la bonne température.

4 Day 3. On the third day, there was still no sign of any
life inside the egg. We started to get worried. Le troisième jour, il n’y avait toujours pas de signe de vie dans les oeufs. On commencait à s’inquiéter The farmer had told us that the chicks would hatch on or around the third day. Le fermier nous avait dit que les poussins allaient commencer à éclore au troisième jour.

5 Day 4. On the fourth day, when we came into school, there were four lovely chicks. Au quatrième jour, quand on est arrivé à l’école, il y avait quatre adorables poussins. Mr Haughey had moved them from the incubator into the brooder box. Monsieur Haughey les avait déplacés de la couveuse à la boîte de nidification. The brooder box had a heat lamp inside to keep the young chicks warm. La boîte de nidification avait une lampe à l’intérieur qui gardait les poussins bien au chaud.

6 Day 5. On the fifth day, two more chicks had hatched.
Au cinquième jour, deux autres poussins avaient éclos. There were now six chicks. Il y en avait maintenant six petits poussins. During the day, two more chicks hatched. Pendant la journée, deux autres poussins avaient éclos. Out of nine eggs, eight chicks eventually hatched. Sur neuf oeufs, huit poussins avaient éventuellement éclos.

7 Day 6 and 7. During the weekend, the chicks went home with
one of the teachers. They couldn’t stay in school, because there was no one to feed them. Pendant le week-end, un des professeurs avait amener les poussins chez eux. Ils ne pouvaient pas rester seuls à l’école parce qu’il y avait personne pour leur donner à manger.

8 Week 2. The rest of the week, we were allowed to handle the chicks.
Le reste de la semaine, on nous avait permis de les prendre et les toucher. We all sat in a circle and put the chicks in the middle. On s’est assis en cercle et on a mis les poussins au milieu.

9 Week 2. We wrote some stories, poems and diaries about the chicks.
On a écrit des histoires, des poêmes et des journaux intimes sur les poussins. Here is one of the poems: Voici un des poêmes: Here is the chick Voici un poussin It’s as yellow as the sun C’est aussi jaune que le soleil It has small, soft feathers Il a de petites plumes toutes douces And it’s looking for it’s mum Et il cherche sa maman

10 Week 2. Here are some interesting facts about chicks.
Voici quelques intéressants faits sur les poussins. Chickens love to play and will run, jump and sunbathe when given the chance. Les poules aiment jouer et courir, sauter et se bronzer au soleil quand l’occasion se presente. A healthy chicken lays about 265 eggs each year. Une poule en bonne santé peut pondre environ 265 oeufs par an. The term hen always refers to a female chicken. La poule est le nom de la femelle. A rooster is a male chicken. Le coq est le nom du male. A chick refers to the babies (of either gender). Et le poussin est le nom du petit qu’il soit male ou femelle.
