2 Y and Place “Allons-y!” Means “Let’s go there!” Y means there.
You can say “y” instead of repeating the name of a place. More specifically, it replaces phrases that start with “à, au, chez or dans” Je vais au parc avec Jean. J’y vais avec Jean. I go to the park with Jean.  I go there with Jean. Les gens fous nagent dans l’océan le premier janvier.  Les gens fous y nagent le premier janvier. Crazy people swim in the ocean on January 1st.  Crazy people swim there January 1st.

3 Y & Things Y also replaces objects. (It does NOT replace people)
What does “Il y a…” mean? “Il y a...” = “There is...” Y also replaces objects. (It does NOT replace people) Nous pensons aux devoirs.  Nous y pensons. We think about homework.  We think about them/it. Ils peuvent mettre les chocolats dans la boîte.  Ils peuvent y mettre les chocolats. They can put the chocolates in the box.  They can put the chocolates there.

Ils y voyagent avec leur enseignant. Vous êtes arrivé à l’école en retard. Vous y êtes arrivé en retard. Geneviève s’intéresse à la musique. Geneviève s’y intéresse. J’ai obéi aux règles, quand j’étais jeune. J’y ai obéi, quand j’étais jeune.

5 En and Quantity En replaces expressions of quantity.
This happens in 2 situations. If there is a number without a noun, “en” comes before the verb. Je veux deux chats.  J’en veux deux. I want 2 cats.  I want 2 (of them). If an expression of quantity is used without a noun. J’ai plusieurs blessures.  J’en ai plusieurs. I have many injuries.  I have many. J’ai beaucoup de devoirs.  J’en ai beacoup. I have lots of homework.  I have lots.

6 En and De En replaces phrases that start with de in any of it’s forms (du, de la, des, de l’, de) Nous revenons de vacances demain matin.  Nous en revenons demain matin. We come back from vacation tomorrow morning.  We come back tomorrow morning. J’ai besoin de l’aide.  J’en ai besoin. I need help.  I need it.

7 PRactice Nous avons beaucoup de patience. Il revient du médecin.
Nous en avons beaucoup. Il revient du médecin. Il en revient. Les filles ont eu quatre os cassés. Les filles en ont eu quatre. Pouvais-tu apporter vingt-cinq copies supplémentaires? Pouvais-tu en apporter vingt-cinq?
