1 L’imparfait

2 When do you use it? You use the imperfect to describe something that you USED TO do. Eg: When I was little, I used to play football Quand j’étais petit(e), je jouais au foot.

3 How do you form it? Take the ‘nous’ form of the present tense...
Eg: (nous) regardons. Take off the ‘ons’ ending… Eg: regard... Add the following endings to the stem… - ais - ait / ait / ait - ions - iez - aient / aient

4 Un exemple: ÉCOUTER Present tense of écouter: nous écoutons
Remove the ‘ons’ ending: écout... Add the endings… j’écoutais I used to listen tu écoutais you used to listen il / elle / on écoutait he / she / one used to listen nous écoutions we used to listen vous écoutiez you used to listen ils / elles écoutaient they used to listen

5 IRREGULAR VERBS The stem of irregular verbs changes but the endings stay the same: The stem of ‘être’ (to be) is ‘ét…’ Verbs like ‘manger’ or ‘ranger’ take an extra ‘e’ in the ‘nous’ form. This is to make the ‘g’ sound. However, the extra ‘e’ is NOT needed before ‘i’.  Example: je mangeais / tu mangeais nous mangions  Similarly, with verbs like ‘commencer’, the final ‘c’ becomes ‘ç’ before ‘a’ or ‘o’ to make it sound soft. Verbs like ‘manger’ or ‘ranger’ take an extra ‘e’ in the ‘nous’ form.  Example: je commençais nous lançons

6 Travaille avec un partenaire
Où habitais-tu quand tu étais petit(e)? Quand j’étais petit(e), j’habitais à Calais dans un appartement. C’était comment? Mon appartement était très petit mais confortable. Tu aimais ta maison? Pourquoi? Je n’aimais pas mon appartement car je partageais ma chambre avec mon petit frère. Et maintenant? Où habites-tu? Maintenant, j’habite à Lille dans une maison avec quatre chambres. 5. Tu aimes ta maison? Pourquoi? Oui, j’aime beaucoup ma maison parce qu’elle est grande et nous avons une piscine.

9 Exemple Quand j’étais petit(e), j’habitais dans une grande maison au bord de la mer avec mes parents et ma soeur. Nous étions heureux. Nous avions un chien qui s’appellait Jules mais nous n’avions pas de poisson rouge. Le lundi après l’école, je faisais de la natation. Je jouais aussi au basket une fois par semaine avec mon équipe. Ma mère travaillait dans une école avec des enfants. Elle était professeur. Mon père était pilote donc il ne dormait pas souvent à la maison. Ma nourriture préférée était le poulet et les frites. Nous allions à Mac Donald de temps en temps.
