Patrolling the LHC M. Gruwé AB-OP LEMIC September 4 th 2007
2
M. Gruwé2 Layout Why? –Role of the patrol When? Who? –Patrol team How? –Procedure –Example: Documents (patrol circuit, check lists) –Validation of procedure –Status Note: –Procedure still to be fully documented and validated by DSO and group leader –Patrol circuits still to be validated by DSO and group leader
3
September 4 th 2007M. Gruwé3 Why? Role of the patrol: –Make sure no-one is left inside the LHC interlocked zones with no access key. –Make sure the LHC interlocked zones are in a state allowing to put beam in Result of the patrol of a sector: SEARCH signal activated for the given sector. Beam mode allowed only if ALL SEARCH signals activated in the whole LHC.
4
September 4 th 2007M. Gruwé4 When? Patrol required –After a sector has been accessed in General mode (no access key required to go in). –Whenever a door is forced (emergency exit): the SEARCH signal drops for the corresponding sectors. Either someone is forcing his way in or someone was in and tries to go out! In any case: a patrol is required. –Whenever a SEARCH signal drops. Beam is not allowed until all SEARCH signals are rearmed anyway.
5
September 4 th 2007M. Gruwé5 Who? Each point is divided into sectors which are patrolled independently from each other. Machine sectors: responsibility of AB –Beam areas –Service areas Experimental areas: responsibility of experiments
6
September 4 th 2007M. Gruwé6 Sectors (example) Point LHC 8 LHCb
7
September 4 th 2007M. Gruwé7 Patrol team Patrol leader: –Patrol team consists of at least two people, including one patrol leader (trained and qualified) –The patrol is under the responsibility of the patrol leader –The patrol leader assures the sector is empty (no-one left in) the sector is in a state such that the beam can be put in
8
September 4 th 2007M. Gruwé8 How? Plan the patrol Before leaving the CCC: –Fill in logbook –Check list: all doors to be closed –Get tools Before patrolling a sector: –Close all doors –Check with CCC Patrol: –CCC activates patrol signal for the given sector –Search the sector –Rearm all search boxes –Check with CCC –CCC removes patrol signal for the given sector After patrolling, return in CCC: –Fill in the logbook
9
September 4 th 2007M. Gruwé9 Search boxes Associated to a sector door: Simple search box:
10
September 4 th 2007M. Gruwé10 Planning the patrol The zone to be patrolled should be in restricted access mode The patrol leader checks that the sector is a priori empty: –No activity foreseen in the zone –Counters show 0 people in the zone
11
September 4 th 2007M. Gruwé11 Before leaving the CCC Patrol leader fills in the logbook indicating: –Date and time of departure –Sectors to be patrolled –Name of patrol leader Check on the LASS panel the EIS to be closed and emergency exit systems to be rearmed: –EIS = Elément Important de Sûreté (=doors, etc…) –Fill in the check list for each sector to be patrolled Patrol leader gets from the CCC a set of tools…
12
September 4 th 2007M. Gruwé12 Tools Bundle of keys –Patrol key –Master-key LEP10000 –… Tools for rearming the emergency exit systems Safety equipment –Safety shoes –Helmet –Biocell –Lamp –Dosimeter –… Possibly: bike or other relevant equipment
13
September 4 th 2007M. Gruwé13 On site: before patrol Before patrolling a sector: –Use the check list filled in the CCC to close all EIS of the sector: End of zone doors Sector doors Trapdoors Mobile shielding walls etc… –Rearm the emergency exit systems on all doors of the sector –Patrol leader checks with the CCC: All doors closed All emergency exit systems rearmed
14
September 4 th 2007M. Gruwé14 Patrol (I) Patrol leader asks the CCC to –Activate the patrol signal for the given sector All search boxes drop All doors of the sector are now locked: –To open the door, one needs the patrol key: only the patrol can access the sector. –(Doors can still be opened using the emergency system but search boxes would then drop again) Patrol team enters the sector to be patrolled, using the patrol key
15
September 4 th 2007M. Gruwé15 Patrol (II) Patrol team –Searches the sector according to the predefined patrol circuit Circuit description Pictures Maps –Calls out –Rearms the patrol boxes of the sector using the patrol key Check list –If a person is found in the sector: Either cancel the patrol: patrol will be redone at a later stage, when situation is clarified Or, the person becomes part of the patrol team and is escorted back outside
16
September 4 th 2007M. Gruwé16 End of patrol Patrol leader checks with CCC: –All patrol boxes are rearmed Patrol team exits the sector using the patrol key Patrol leader asks the CCC to remove the patrol signal for the given sector –Sector is now in restricted access mode: doors are unlocked –The SEARCH signal for the sector is armed if: All doors are closed All emergency exit systems are rearmed All search boxes are rearmed CCC confirms to the patrol leader the SEARCH signal has been rearmed for the given sector
17
September 4 th 2007M. Gruwé17 Returning to the CCC Patrol leader fills in the logbook: –Date and time of return –Sectors patrolled (successfully or not) –Any comment or observation –Possibly reason for cancellation or failure of patrol

September 4 th 2007M. Gruwé26 Validation of patrol procedure (I) In situ: –Identify and list hidden places, hiding places, holes, trapdoors, etc… –Design of a patrol circuit –Take pictures (access, peculiarities, etc…) Patrol circuit documents (for each sector): –Write down steps of patrol procedure How many people required for the patrol team Tools required Circuit itself (order, direction) Search boxes to be rearmed Places to be careful about –Draw circuit on maps, including waiting points: When there is a split, one patrol member searches the area the other patrol member waits at the split to insure that no-one can go from a non-searched area to the already searched area.

September 4 th 2007M. Gruwé27 Validation of patrol procedure (II) Simulation of patrol: –In collaboration with TS (access team) –Build patrol teams: OP members for the machine side Experiment members for the experimental area + People from the LHC access project (TS-CSE) –Close one LHC point –Patrol the full zone (all sectors) in realistic conditions, based on the document –Debriefing: comments from patrol team members
