7 Regular plurals When we want to talk about more than one thing, or noun, we need to make it plural. In English, if we want to make something plural, we just add ‘s’. E.g. one pen, five pens In French, we can usually do exactly the same thing. E.g. un stylo, cinq stylos Easy!

Regular plurals Unfortunately there are some exceptions to this rule. Some words don’t add ‘s’ in the plural form, and with some words the ‘s’ might come in an unexpected place! Look at the examples below. How does each plural differ from the norm? 10 Il y a… Just writing ‘cinq stylos’ is fine, but it’s not a proper sentence. Read the following sentence: Il y a cinq stylos. It means ‘There are five pens’. So which words mean ‘there is’ or ‘there are’? Answer: Il y a means ‘there is’ or ‘there are’.

11 Il y a… Write these out again, but this time write a proper sentence starting with ‘Il y a’. 1) 2) 3) 4) Il y a cinq stylos.

Writing the date in French Writing the date in French is easy. If you know your numbers, then you will have no problems at all! Look at the following dates. The only exception to this is when you want to say the first of the month. Instead of using un, as you might expect from the examples above, you use the word premier, which makes sense really as it means first. Le premier janvier est le jour de l’an!

25 Before you go on to the next chapter, complete one of the activities below:
Use a dictionary to find 10 French words which are exactly the same in English and 10 French words which are almost the same. If they are nouns, make a note of which are masculine (nm) and which are feminine (nf). Have you ever been to France? If you have, make a list of at least ten differences that you noticed between France and the UK. Write a few sentences about where in France you went and what you did and saw there. France isn’t the only country where French is spoken. Can you make a list of the other French-speaking (francophone) countries? Make a list of at least ten famous French people. They can be living or from the past. Write a short sentence saying why each one is famous. This section ends with a small selection of cultural activities. Pupils will opt for different questions, and their findings can be discussed in class.
