3 What is the Passé Composé? The passé composé is a verb tense which is used to describe events which occurred in the past. It may be compared to the English past tense such as in sentences like: I spoke I spoke I have spoken I have spoken I did speak I did speak

4 The following equation may be used to help remember the order: How is the Passé Composé conjugated? Subject + Auxiliary Verb + Past Participle Nous + avons + étudié. Ils + ont + voyagé Tu + as + mangé

5 What is the passé composé? French Past Tense –I have spoken –I spoke A Compound Tense –Conjugate avoir –Add the past participle

6 What is a Past Participle? A past participle is a verb part that cannot stand alone as a verb. It represents a past action and must be associated with an auxiliary verb. In regular forms, it is formed by dropping the infinitive ending and adding the past participle ending to the root of the verb.

16 Agreement of Past Participles When a verb uses être in the passé composé, the past participle must agree with the subject of the verb In gender (masculine or feminine) In number (singular or plural) Add an e to make a past participle feminine Elle est partie de la maison à 8h30. Add an s to make a past participle plural Nous sommes venus chez toi. Add an e and an s for both Elles sont nées hier matin.
