2 WAYS OF ASKING A ‘YES-NO’ QUESTION
Intonation: raising your voice at the end of the phrase: Tu es sorti hier soir? Using Est-ce que Est-ce que tu es sorti hier soir? Using inversion Es-tu sorti hier soir?

3 TACKLING INVERSION INVERSION WITH UNSTRESSED PRONOUNS (je, tu, il, elle, nous, vous, ils, elles) Straightforward; only consideration is the insertion of a euphonic ‘t’ between two vowels to avoid hiatus Il avait déjà mangé →Avait-il déjà mangé? Elle mange ici ce soir? → Mange-t-elle ici ce soir? no “t” is added if the verb already ends with a “t”, nor is one added if the verb ends with a “d”, as “d” is pronounced [t] Il prend son sac→ prend-il son sac ?

4 TACKLING INVERSION Inversion with other nouns / noun clauses: note the need to put the subject first and then invert Jeanne veut lire son livre maintenant→Jeanne veut-elle lire son livre maintenant? Hollande n’est pas très populaire …Cela est-il vrai? Hollande est impopulaire → Hollande est-il impopulaire? L’équipe de France s’est qualifiée pour la coupe du monde L’équipe de France s’est-elle qualifiée pour la coupe du monde?

5 ‘Fronting’ a question with a question word
Use question words (qui, que, quel, où, pourquoi, comment, combien, etc…) With est-ce que Qui est-ce que tu as vu? Comment est-ce qu’il fait cela? Quelles questions est-ce qu’on vous a posées? With inversion Qui as-tu vu? Comment fait-il cela? Quelles questions vous a-t-on posées?

6 ‘Fronting’ a question that includes a named noun or proper noun
Qui Claude veut-elle appeler? Combien de matchs l’équipe de France a-t-elle joués? Pourquoi la France souffre-t-elle d’un grand malaise social actuellement?

7 Questions with prepositions
J’ai parlé à Chantale→À qui as-tu parlé? Avec qui Paul est-il sorti? À quoi pensez-vous? De quoi ces gens discutent-ils?

8 WRITING A QUESTION IN A PASSAGE OF PROSE (ESSAY)
La France souffre d’un grand malaise social. Pourquoi? Est-ce vrai? Cette dissertation a pour but de découvrir pourquoi La France souffre d’un grand malaise… Dans ce qui suit nous nous poserons la question de savoir si La France souffre véritablement d’un malaise social. Est-ce que la France souffre actuellement d’un grand malaise social? La France souffre-t-elle vraiment d’un malaise social?
