Introduction Asthma is a lower respiratory tract disease;it is an pulmonary obstructive disease. It is also called as REACTIVE AIRWAY DISEASE.

What is Asthma A chronic inflammatory disorder of the airways in which many cells and cellular elements play a role. The chronic inflammation causes recurrent episodes of wheezing, breathlessness, chest tightness, and coughing, particularly at night and in the early morning. These episodes are usually associated with widespread but variable airflow obstruction that is often reversible either spontaneously or with treatment.

What is Asthma Clinical features commonly encountered in asthma patients are: Wheezing (expiratory noise). Chest tightness (caused by spasm of bronchial smooth muscles). Chronic cough (caused either by respiratory tract infection or allergic in origin). Dyspnea (difficult or uncomfortable breathing).

What Causes Asthma factors interact to cause asthma, most often early in life. These factors include: An inherited tendency to develop allergies, called atopy Parents who have asthma Certain respiratory infections during childhood Contact with some airborne allergens or exposure to some viral infections in infancy or in early childhood when the immune system is developing

What Are the Signs and Symptoms of Asthma

Who Is at Risk for Asthma Asthma affects people of all ages, but it most often starts during childhood Among children, more boys have asthma than girls. But among adults, more women have the disease than men

How Is Asthma Treated and Controlled Asthma is a long-term disease that has no cure. The goal of asthma treatment is to control the disease Good asthma control will: Prevent chronic and troublesome symptoms, such as coughing and shortness of breathcoughing Reduce your need for quick-relief medicines (see below) Help you maintain good lung function Let you maintain your normal activity level and sleep through the night Prevent asthma attacks that could result in an emergency room visit or hospital stay

How Can Asthma Be Prevented For people with asthma, having an asthma management plan is the best way to prevent symptoms. An asthma management plan is something developed by you and your doctor to help you control your asthma, instead of your asthma controlling you. An effective plan should allow you to: 1. Be active without having asthma symptoms. 2.Fully take part in exercise and sports. 3.Sleep all night, without asthma symptoms. 4.Attend school or work regularly. 5.Have the clearest lungs possible. 6.Have few or no side effects from asthma medications. 7.Have no emergency visits or stays in the hospital.

NURSING MANAGEMENT Check vital signs at regular intervals. Monitor allergic symptoms. Administer medication, note action of medications. Avoid exposure to pollution environment. Deep breathing exercises. Health education.

In conclusion… Asthma is a common, chronic respiratory disease that can affect anyone Most symptoms are typically mild, but severe attacks can be very life-threatening and measures need to be taken to prevent them
