Did you guess that all these words have a French origin? - Tiretaine = "strong, coarse fabric" - Jaquet = "short coat with sleeves" - Robe = "long, loose outer garment" - Botte = “a high, thick shoe” - Blouse = "workman's or peasant's smock" - Bonet = "kind of cloth used as a headdress” - Escarpe = “pilgrim's purse suspended from the neck” - Façon = “form, make, outward appearance” - Gênes* = the French word for Genoa (Italian port) - de Nimes* = “from the French city of Nîmes” *That’s right, even the words “jeans”, “denim” and “tartan” originate from French words, incroyable, non !!! The story of the “blue jeans” begins in the city of Genoa, in Italy, famous for its cotton corduroy manufacture. “Jeans” fabric from Genoa (at that time) was in fact very similar to corduroy. Genoese sailors started to use it to cover and protect their goods on the docks from the weather. During the Republic of Genoa, this fabric was exported by Genoese sailors throughout Europe. Gênes, the French word for Genoa, may therefore be the origin of the word "jeans” as, in the French city of Nîmes, weavers tried to reproduce the fabric exactly, but without success. However, with experimentation, and through trial and error, they developed another fabric that became known as “denim”, literally "de Nîmes " meaning “from Nîmes”. It is only at the end of the nineteenth century that the now so popular “blue jeans” arrived in the United States!
