Questions!?!
3
How to ask a question There are 3 ways to ask a question in French. They are… To use “Est-ce que…” To change your tone of voice To make an inversion (to swap around word order)
4
Est-ce que… Leave the verb as it is and insert “est-ce que”
1. Elle travaille = she works Est-ce qu’elle travaille? = Does she work? 2. Il habite = He lives Où est-ce qu’il habite? = Where does he live?
5
Tone of voice You can make a question by giving a questioning tone to a statement. Tu travailles = you are working Tu travailles? = Are you working This is common in conversation but not in written French
6
Inversion To make a question turn the verb around and join with a hyphen. 1. Tu fais = you are doing Que fais-tu? = What are you doing? 2. Vous allez = you go Pourquoi allez-vous ..?= why are you going…?
7
Inversion 2 When, as a result of inversion, two vowels meet, a t must be inserted with hyphens either side. Quand arrive-t-il? = When is he arriving? Comment va-t-elle…? = How is she going to…? The inversion is hardly ever used with “je” except for “Puis-je” (Q form of “je peux)

Question words Qui = Who? Quoi / Que = What? Pourquoi = Why?
Quand = When? Où = Where? Comment = How? Combien = How much / how many? These usually go at the front of the question (although in conversation they may be placed at the end…p. ex Tu fais quoi? Vous voulez combien?)
