Forming the negative To make a sentence negative in French,
You put ne… pas around the verb. Note that ne become n’ before a vowel.

Examples Positive Negative Je suis américain. Tu es amusant.
Elle est sociable. Nous sommes de Paris. Je ne suis pas américain. Tu n’es pas amusant. Elle n’est pas sociable. Nous ne sommes pas de Paris.

“Shoulder buddy” verbs
Whenever there are 2 verbs close to each other, the first verb is conjugated and the second one is in the infinitve. In negative sentences, the “ne…pas” surrounds the conjugated verb.

Examples Positive Negative J’aime manger le chocolat.
Tu adores voyager. Elle aime dessiner. Nous aimons visiter Paris. Je n’ aime pas manger le chocolat. Tu n’adores pas voyager. Elle n’aime pas dessiner. Nous n’ aimons pas visiter Paris.
