1 Unité 4: Le plus-que-parfait
As in English, the PLUPERFECT (le plus-que-parfait) is used to describe what people HAD DONE or WHAT HAD HAPPENED before another past action or event. Cet été, j’ai visité Québec. L’année avant, j’avais visité Montréal. Quand nous sommes arrivés à la gare, le train était parti. This summer, I visited Quebec. Last year, I had visited Montreal. When we arrived at the station, the train had left.

2 Le plus-que-parfait Uses of the PLUS-QUE-PARFAIT:
1. To describe what HAD happened in the past PRIOR to another action or situation passé composé imparfait passé composé Je me suis inspiré par ce que j’avais vécu. imparfait Il voulait me contacter car il avait vu mes spectacles.

3 Le plus-que-parfait Uses of the PLUS-QUE-PARFAIT:
2. To express a CONDTION which was not realized (did not happen) Si + sub + PQP , sub + conditional passé …. Hier, si j’ avais eu le temps, je serais bien allé au cinéma avec vous. Yesterday, if I had had the time, I would have gone to the movies with you.

4 Le plus-que-parfait voyager = to have travelled formation:
IMPERFECT of avoir or être + PAST PARTICIPLE voyager = to have travelled avais voyagé avions voyagé avais voyagé n’aviez pas voyagé n’avait pas voyagé avaient voyagé Interrogative: Est-ce que tu avais voyagé? Avais-tu voyagé?

étions allé (e)(s) étais allé (e) n’étiez pas allé (e)(s) n’était pas allé (e) étaient allé (e)(s) Interrogative: Tu étais allé? Etais-tu allé?

6 Le plus-que-parfait s’amuser = to have had fun m’étais amusé (e)
nous étions amusé (e)(s) t’étais amusé (e) ne vous étiez pas amusé (e)(s) ne s’était pas amusé (e) s’étaient amusé (e)(s) Interrogative: Tu t’étais amusé? T’étais-tu amusé?

8 Le plus-que-parfait How to combine tenses in the same sentence:
Action in REMOTE PAST Completed action in RECENT PAST L’activiste n’avait pas fini de parler quand vous avez coupé le micro. The activist had not finished talking when you cut off the microphone. Nous lui avons dit que Macron avait gagné les éléctions. We told him/her that Macron had won the elections.

9 Le plus-que-parfait How to combine tenses in the same sentence:
Condition in RECENT PAST Action in REMOTE PAST Il y avait des drapeaux partout parce que le président était arrivé la veille. the president had arrived the evening before. There were flags everywhere because L’accusé souriat parce que les juges n’avaient pas mis en prison. The accused was smiling because the judges had not put him in prison.

10 Le plus-que-parfait Si + PPQ Si j’avais su que tu avais un plan!
Used after the word SI to mean if only Si + PPQ Si j’avais su que tu avais un plan! If only I had known that you had a map! S’il seulement il n’était pas arrivé en retard! If only he had not arrived late!

11 VENIR (imparfait) + de + infinitive
Le plus-que-parfait To say that something JUST HAPPENED in the past, use VENIR (imparfait) + de + infinitive Je venais de raccrocher quand le portable a sonné de nouveau. I had just hung up when the cell phone rang again! Le président venait de signer l’accord quand il a entendu l’explosion. The president had just signed the agreement when he heard the explosion.
