The sound /u/ The sound /u/ occurs in such English words as Sue, shoe, and too. The French /u/ is shorter, tenser, and more rounded than the vowel sound in English. The sound /u/ is usually represented by the letter combination ou, as in words such as tout, nous, and vous.

The sound /y/ The sound /y/ is represented in the words salut, super, and musique. This sound does not exist in English. To pronounce /y/, start by saying /i/ as in the English word me. Then round your lips, as if you were going to say the English word moon, keeping your tongue pressed behind your lower teeth.
