2 OUI et NON There are two ways to ask a “oui” or “non” question.
INTONATION – Use the pitch of your voice to imply you are asking a question. Try to read the following sentences letting intonation distinguish the difference. Elle mange des frites. Elle mange des frites? EST-CE QUE…(sounds like s-kuh) Add “est-ce que…” to the beginning of the sentence makes it a yes or no question. Elle mange les frites. Est-ce qu’elle mange les frites?

3 Information Questions
To ask an information question use a question word followed by “est-ce que” plus a subject and a verb.

4 WHAT “Que” usually translate as what in French.
Notice that the final “e” of “que” is dropped if the subject begins with a vowel. Qu’est-ce que tu aimes faire au printemps? J’aime faire des pique-niques. Qu’est-ce que tu fais comme sport? Je joue au tennis.

5 WHEN “Quand” means when in French. Quand est-ce qu’elle fait du ski?
Elle fait du ski en hiver. Elle fait du ski le weekend. Elle fait du ski en décembre.

6 WHERE “Où” translates as where. Où est-ce que tu joues au football?
Je joue au stade. Où est-ce que vous faites du ski? Nous faisons du ski à la montagne.

7 WHY “Pourquoi” translates as “why” Pourquoi est-ce qu’il étudie?
Il étudie parce qu’il y a un examen. Parce que = because Pourquoi est-ce que vous faites du sport? Nous faisons du sport parce que nous sommes sportifs.

8 HOW “Comment” translates as how. Comment est-ce qu’on joue au basket?
On lance un ballon. You have learned several questions that use “comment” Comment tu t’appelles? Literally “How do you call yourself?” Comment-allez vous? Literally “ How are you going?” – for feelings. Comment est-elle? Literally “How is she” – for descriptions HUH??? - COMMENT

9 WITH WHOM “Avec qui” translates as who or whom in English.
Avec qui est-ce que tu joues au volley? Je joue avec ma soeur.

10 WHO “Qui” usually translates as “who”.
“Est-ce que” does not have to follow qui! Notice that verbs that follow “qui” get conjugated like “il” or “elle”. Qui joue au hockey? Guy joue au hockey? Qui parle français? Nous parlons francais. Qui vend des crayons? La vendeuse vend des crayons.

11 EXCEPTION If any of the question words are followed by the verb “être”, they will not use “est-ce que”. Où est mon sac-à-dos? Il est sur la table. Comment est-il? Il est grand et mignon!

12 SPOKEN FRENCH Spoken French tends to be less formal!
The position of the question word in French varies based on the level of formality. In common spoken French the question word will often come at the end. Tu t’appelles comment? Tu vas au cinéma quand? Vous téléphonez à qui?
