I want to tell you a bit (of what there is to say) about Safety at CERN. Safety at CERN covers Occupational Health and Safety Environment Before concentrating on Safety at CERN, I want to point out Safety OUTSIDE CERN H&S et Environnement - Induction 2010

Heuer, 11 Janvier 2010 The risks in the region are numerous and come with attractive activities in the mountains or on the lake. I’m not advocating to stop these, only to be careful and aware of the risks. While at work at CERN there are a plethora of things that can and do go wrong. * Traffic * Workplace risks * Industrial risks * Radiological risks Safety is all about controlling the risks and preventing accidents to happen. The DG has made a clear statement about this earlier this year. In General you must: Take care of your own health and safety and Take care of the effects of your actions (or lack of) to people around you to people later on: clients, customers, next in line etc. (3) co-operate with others on health and safety, (4) not interfere with, or misuse, anything provided for your health, safety or welfare. CNGS Tunnel PS Tunnel CPS SPS/CNGS LHC SPS Tunnel To get a grasp of the risks related to the operation of CERN facilities The main installations are called accelerators, and for the sake of it, we compare these with huge light bulbs. The are in fact 3 –interconnected- light bulbs: * PS * SPS * LHC Connected to each installations are experiments like Atlas, Alice, CMS, etc. The installations are controlled and operated from the main control room in the Prevessin Moens site. 5 Opération des installations - Appréhension des risques
When all supplies are ready then you can start to operate the beams As with a light bulb, you know there is electricity, a hazard, so you don’t touch it. When there is beam in the accelerators, nobody is allowed near the installations at the risk for his life. When you switch off a light bulb, it cools down and within few minutes you can touch it. With an accelerator, the heat can be compared to its radioactivity. It decays rapidly (matter of hours) and then you can come close to the installations. It is important to stress that an accelerator is far from a nuclear powerplant. We do not have nuclear fuels and when the electricity is switched of, the machine stops naturaly. Systèmes de protection des accélérateurs/détecteurs So there are two basic modes of operations: when the accelerators are working and When they are not, and maintenance can be done. In fact most work is done by everybody and everyday at CERN. The HSE unit supports the departments, groups, sections and individuals. We give advice, We collect data, do analyses and write reports We do specialist measurements, e.g. for radiation protection We grant clearance and derogations We give specialist advice on how to implement the Safety policy and rules. EDH  Rapport accident interne After something has gone wrong and the worst is over…. You HAVE to report the incident: * to your supervisor * in the electronic incident reporting form. This can be difficult and the people involved often find it embarrassing, or not worth the trouble. Yet, without reporting the accident can and will happen tomorrow, next weeek, next month or next year. (1) TSO: Territorial Safety Officer (Sécurité du Bâtiment) Identifier/Contacter le TSO de votre bâtiment  Pour connaître les risques associés à votre bâtiment/environnement de travail (2) Superviseur (Sécurité du lieu de travail/poste de travail) Votre superviseur doit vous informer des risques en matière d’H&S de votre poste de travail Pour connaître les risques de votre poste de travail Pour connaître les mesures de prévention (protections collectives disponibles) Pour avoir les EPI obligatoires (Equipements de Protection Individuelle) Pour avoir les compétences nécessaires pour travailler en sécurité  Entreprendre l’Evaluation du besoin en Formations Sécurité avec votre superviseur (3) Modules Sécurité obligatoires Prendre les e-cours de Sécurité obligatoires sur SIR Go and meet the TSO of your building. Your supervisor will tell you about * the risks and measures for safety and your health, * how to do things safely * which Safety course you can take and which you have to take At the website SIR.CERN.CH you will find CERNs e-learning tool. There are four levels of the basic Safety course.
