Did you know? The Tour de France 2007 started in London
3.5 billion people watch The Tour every year on TV Lance Armstrong is the only rider in 97 years to have won the Tour 7 times in a row, but was stripped of his wins in 2013 due to his use of performance-enhancing drugs during the wins. An Englishman, Tom Simpson, died while riding the Tour in 1967 An average stage of the Tour takes 7 hours to ride A rider burns almost 6,000 calories while riding a stage (3 times the normal daily amount for a man!) There are usually 6-8 HUGE mountains to ride up each year!! (each are higher than the highest mountain in the UK) Tour de France riders usually weigh between 9-10 stone This year there will be 13.3 km of COBBLES to ride over! The “BROOM WAGON” is a car with a broom sticking out of it that marks the end of the peloton for each stage (i.e. that the last rider has gone through the finish line)
