2 Le subjonctif des verbes réguliers The verb tenses you have learned so far, such as the present tense and the pass é composé, belong to the indicative mood. There is another mood called the subjunctive mood. In certain situations, you must use the subjunctive. Use the subjunctive with expressions of necessity, such as il faut que and il est important que. The verb that follows these expressions will be in the subjunctive.

5 Le subjonctif des verbes irréguliers Some verbs, like the ones youll see on the next page, have two stems to which you add the subjunctive endings. The stem for nous and vous comes from the nous form of the present indicative. The other stem comes from the ils form.

9 More subjunctive expressions Youve used the subjunctive after expressions of necessity (il faut que, il est important que). Another such expression is il est nécessaire que. You also use the subjunctive to express certain requests and with certain emotions. Je (ne)veux (pas) que… Je suis triste que… Je suis content(e) que… Il est bon que…
