Telling Time in French The French use 2 clocks: 12 hour clock
Conversation Most common Use AM/PM 24 hour clock Schedules Trains, planes, subway, etc. Do NOT use AM/PM

What time is it? To answer, use the following pattern: Il est # of hours + heure(s) + # of minutes.

Il est une heure. (It is 1 o’clock.)

It is 2:20. Il est deux heures vingt. It is 10:40. Il est dix heures quarante. It is 8:35. Il est huit heures trente-cinq.

Other phrases: There are two ways to read the following time in English: 5:15 One can say: Five fifteen OR Quarter after five There are two ways to write 5:15 in French also!! Il est cinq heures quinze. OR Il est cinq heures et quart. Et quart = ¼ after
