2 Negatives 1 In French you put the words ne and pas around the verb to make a sentence negative. If the verb starts with a vowel or h, then ne is shortened to n’. You’d say ‘Je n’aime pas les serpents.’ What do I do if I want to make a sentence negative in French? Ok, so how would I say ‘I don’t like snakes’ in French?

5 Negatives with pronouns 1
If the verb is reflexive, the ne and pas go around the reflexive pronoun as well as the verb. Je ne me lève pas de bonne heure le dimanche. Je ne me brosse pas les dents. What do I do if I want to make a sentence with a reflexive verb negative? Can you give me an example?

6 Negatives with pronouns 2
If there are other pronouns in the sentence, then the negative must fit around these too: Les poireaux sont des légumes horribles. Je ne les mange pas. Je n’aime pas mon frère. Je ne lui parle pas. Il n’y a pas de distractions dans mon village.

Je fume tous les jours. Je ne pratique jamais de sport et je prends rarement le petit déjeuner. Je bois beaucoup de whisky et je ne mange pas de fruits ou de légumes. Je me brosse les dents de temps en temps. Je regarde souvent la télé et je mange plein de chocolat et de bonbons. Je ronge mes ongles et je ne vais jamais chez le dentiste.

11 Ne… jamais 2 In French the expression for never is ne…jamais and works in exactly the same way as ne and pas. Simple, you’d say ‘Je ne joue jamais au tennis.’ Ok, so now I know how to say I don’t do something but how do I say I never do something in French? Ok, so how would I say ‘I never play tennis’ in French?

12 Ne… jamais 3 Can you say you never do these activities? Watch out for reflexive verbs – the reflexive pronoun (me) counts as part of the verb, so the negative fits round that too! 1. Je regarde les infos. 2. Je me brosse les dents. 3. Je joue au rugby. 4. Je me lave. 5. Je mange au collège. 6. Je me couche à minuit. Je ne regarde jamais les infos. Je ne me brosse jamais les dents. Je ne joue jamais au rugby. Je ne me lave jamais. Je ne mange jamais au collège. Je ne me couche jamais à minuit.

All these negative expressions work exactly like ne…pas and ne…jamais, that is they fit around the verb.* Can you work out what each of these sentences means in English? En août, je ne vais nulle part. Je reste chez moi parce que j’adore la vie à la ferme. Je déteste mon village. Il n’y a jamais rien à faire! C’est très isolé à Villiers-sur-Indre. Parfois, il y a des jours où je ne vois personne. J’habite dans un hameau. Il n’y a que sept familles, et la vie est très tranquille. *Note however that ‘personne’ and ‘aucun’ are never placed between the auxiliary and the past participle in compound tenses. For example: ‘Je n’ai vu personne’.

18 Double negation with ne…pas
When ne... pas is used in a double negative with rien, it cancels out rien so that the meaning is "not nothing": Je n’ose pas rien faire. I don’t dare do nothing. > I don’t dare do anything. Jamais and plus can be used with each other as well as with the negative words aucun, personne, and rien. Je ne peux plus jamais manger de viande. The negative adverb ne... que means ‘only’ so ne... pas que means ‘not only’. Compare: Catastrophes naturelles : ça n’arrive pas qu’aux autres !
