Schneider Electric 9 - Division - Name – Date What is Aliasing? ●Aliasing is an effect that causes different continuous signals to become indistinguishable (or aliases of one another) when sampled. When this happens, the original signal cannot be uniquely reconstructed from the sampled signal. ●Aliasing is a major concern in power quality analysis because improper sampling of the analog signal will cause high-frequency components to be aliased with genuine low-frequency ones, and be incorrectly reconstructed. IEC 61000-4-7 (2002) :Aliasing
10
Schneider Electric 10 - Division - Name – Date Aliasing Effect Wagon Wheel Example ●Optical illusion that occurs in older movies when wagon wheels appear to be turning backwards. ●Caused by slower frame speed of camera relative to the high speed of the wagon wheels.
11
Schneider Electric 11 - Division - Name – Date What Causes Aliasing? ●Aliasing (or folding) occurs when a signal is sampled at a rate that is insufficient to capture the changes in the signal. ●Sampling at a lower rates results not only in missing data, but also incorrect re-creation of the waveform, leading to faulty analysis. Sampled Source Sampling Point Re-created Signal Sampled SourceRe-created Signal
12
Schneider Electric 12 - Division - Name – Date Aliasing Effect Ex ample Sampled Source Re-created Signal Sampled SourceRe-created Signal Actual Reported
13
Schneider Electric 13 - Division - Name – Date How do you avoid Aliasing? ●The Nyquist Sampling Theorem states that in order to avoid aliasing, the sample rate should be at least twice the highest frequency contained in the sample Sampled Source Sampling Point Re-created Signal Sampled SourceRe-created Signal
14
Schneider Electric 14 - Division - Name – Date Sampling Rate ●Sample rates are important in adequately representing the original signal. ●Oversampling the original signal: ●Increases the meter’s bandwidth ●Reduces metering error ●Provides a closer approximation to the original signal PQA 2004
15
Schneider Electric 15 - Division - Name – Date Flicker is a voltage variation that provokes changes in luminosity (the lights literally flickering). Why measure flicker? When lights flicker it cause annoyance, nausea and even seizures in some people Loss of employee productivity is the primary economic driver You do not need to be able to notice flicker to be affected by flicker Typical causes of flicker... Arc furnaces, welding machine, signalling voltages, boilers, regulation devices Flicker - IEC 61000-4-15

19
Schneider Electric 19 - Division - Name – Date Disturbance direction detection ●Requires a trigger (Sag, Swell or a Transient) to run the algorithm ●Then the ION 75/7650 determines the direction of a disturbance ●Provides a confidence score and the direction of the disturbance. 20
Schneider Electric 20 - Division - Name – Date Alarm Setpoint Learning ●Setpoint Module (65).- Monitors a source with respect to an absolute threshold and it can evaluate either an over or an under condition ●Sag/Swell Module (1).- The Sag/Swell Module learns two values: a sag limit and a swell limit ●Disturbance Analyzer (6).- Learns an over-alarm If the pickup value is greater than 100% of the nominal value at the moment when learning period is initiated; also, an under-alarm will be learned if the pickup values is less than 100% of the nominal value. ●And Transient Module (6).- Evaluates when transients occur in the system. ●All four modules Include the following characteristics: ●Learn now input ●Learn install mode ●Learn duration

EtherGateModemGate Ethernet Telephone line Serial ●EtherGate: access via Ethernet port and ModbusTCP to daisy-chained Modbus devices connected to the meter’s serial ports ●ModemGate: access from telephone network to devices connected to the meter’s serial ports
23
Schneider Electric 23 - Division - Name – Date Simple Network Management protocol (SNMP) ●Some applications as Data Centers and Critical Power require SNMP protocol to map (convert) registers or data from the meter in to usable information for the different systems. ●This implementation of the ION7650 and 7550 supports read only mode, except for the following SNMP related text strings: ●System Contact ●System Name ●System Location ●You can also customize the text on the meter’s MIB (Management Information Base) file: ion7x50schneiderMIB.asn.
24
Schneider Electric 24 - Division - Name – Date Simple Network Management protocol (SNMP) ●An SNMP-managed network typically consists of: managed devices, agents, and one or more network management systems. ●The Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) is used to communicate management information between the network management stations and the agents in the network elements. ●A managed device can be any piece of equipment that sits on your data network and is SNMP compliant. Energy meters are examples of managed devices. ●An agent is typically software that resides on a managed device. The agent collects data from the managed device and translates that information into a format that can be passed over the network using SNMP.
25
Schneider Electric 25 - Division - Name – Date Simple Network Management protocol (SNMP) ●A network-management system monitors and controls managed devices. The network management system issues requests and devices return responses. ●This implementation of the ION7650 and 7550 only supports read only mode, except for the following SNMP related text strings: ●System Contact ●System Name ●System Location ●You can also customize the text on the meter’s MIB (Management Information Base) file: ion7x50schneiderMIB.asn.
